Re: Missing hiker in Mazatzals - gpsjoe (Joe Domin)

I am wondering why anybody hiking alone anywhere would not spend a few bucks for a Spot2 beacon? It seems like such a good idea. Am I missing something?
Prayers to Joe :(

Leaned on a boulder with a large crack in one day-under my hand was a baby rattler(I thought that boulder felt a little soft!) When I lifted my hand he ran for the crack and I ran for the hills(I'm not sure who was more alarmed)

Next time you go to Kentucky Fried Chicken ask for extra packets of butter. They are perfect for backpacking!

Lanterns-Propane,gas,battery or oil??

I used to have propane lanterns.Very noisy-sounds like jet fighters buzzing the camp. Two brightness settings-as bright as the Sun/brighter than the Sun. I still have 2 oil lanterns for times when I need more subdued lighting. My current favorites are Coleman remote control fluorescents.Of course th...

I use a Bogen monopod as a hiking stick. I always take my digital camera along & the monopod helps me steady the camera. When not shooting pics it makes a nice adjustable stick.

As far as I know campfires are allowed in developed campgrounds only for now in all the Az. Nat. Forests. That should change soon (I Hope!!)

LED Flashlights & Headlights

Have any of you tried the Led Flashlights or headlights for nighthikes or general use? I've been using a single Led flashlight for a while & like it a lot. Not much illumination but the Led will last for thousands of hours & the batteries are supposed to last up to 20 times longer. I've been...

Secret Spots??

Over the last 16 yrs. hiking in Az. I've come across a few spots where I seldom see other people or even see evidence(litter, cartridge casings, etc.) of use by others. Most of these are not too far from Phx. They are small areas that could not stand too much traffic without losing much of the qualitie...
