I don't think it's a prairie dog. It looks to me like a Botta's Pocket Gopher ( http://fireflyforest.net/firefly/2007/12/29/bottas-pocket-gopher - note in particular where they're found in Arizona ). My field guide doesn't show any dark morph prairie dogs, and your rodents are definitely dark colore...
