Re: CG Mountain High Point
I am often there on weekend mornings, doing laps between the towers and the big dip at the bottom.

Re: Mount Lemmon from Catalina SP?
If you were starting at 5 a.m. and I didn't have family in town that weekend, I would be very interested.
As for water, it should be available nearly up to Romero Pass, and then again in Wilderness of Rocks (if you go that route, which I would recommend because it "rocks").

Too bad I didn't see this until now. I've done Catalina to Mt. Lemmon before, it's quite the hike.

Re: Lightning
I was hiking with a friend in Paradise Park several years ago. We came to an area where what appeared to be freshly cut lumber about 2" x 2" and 5 or 6 ft. long were randomly stuck into the ground. As we stood there scratching our heads and wondering why anyone would do that, I happened to...

Re: Black bear activity forces campground closure
Bears are already numerous in the Huachucas I'm sure. Unfortunately they are not much of a threat to humans. I think they need more jaguars...joe bartels wrote:I wish they'd release a large amount of black bears in the Huachuca's to help weed out some of the undocumented travelers.

I suppose you don't see many haboobs living in Flag. Like Joe said, we get a few every summer down here in the desert.

Re: Secret places
There is a place I found a couple of years ago. Its in a small canyon in a barren desert mountain range. There is a trickle of a creek that is spring fed, with trees, and leopard frogs. It isn't visible from any road, and there is no sign of it on the topo map. I'm not sure why it doesn't have a nam...

Re: False Tracks
Yeah, speaking of the desert, I need to find the way back out there myself. Haven't been having much success with that for some time now.
I've been walking on it, without being in it, if ya know what I mean...

Re: A Day Hike down from the south rim and back?
It can be done if you are in good physical condition, although it will quite warm now. Of the trails I am familiar with, the South Kaibab is the shortest route from the South Rim, and therefore also the steepest overall, with no water available on the trail. You might go down on the South Kaibab, an...

Re: hiking shoe/boot/sandal recommendations thread
For me, the trend has been to go ever lighter in recent years. On any kind of maintained trail, it is running shoes all the way. These days, I am wearing a pair of Asics Gel-Kahana 2's. I wore them on a 2-nite GC backpacking trip last month, and they were great! I don't know how I would feel about t...
