Re: Trekking Poles
I recommend that you avoid carbon fibre. I tried acarbin fibre set several years ago and had them break when I was catching myself from falling. The break was near the handle and left a knife sharp point which with a little bad luck could have sliced my wrist. And yes I did fall as they broke suddenl...

Love my eTrex which has saved me a couple times from pointless wanderingjohnlp wrote:You can get a Garmin eTrex Vista hcx for about $200. Not as nice as the more expensive models, but does the job just fine. If you go for a less expensive model, make sure you get expandable memory - hc(x). c is for color.

Re: Canyon Fire (NE of Blue Ridge Reservoir near Hwy 87)
The fire has apparently gone through the main climbing area (AzDailySun) . Sad since it was such a beautiful area and great climbing. It will take some time to determine what is and is not climbable. I imagine that Deidre who published the guide and did much of the building must be heartbroken.

Re: SPOT
I can see canyons being an issue, but how about remote, wooded areas? For example Blue Range Primitive Area. It seems like as long as a GPS could snag a signal, the Spot wouldn't have much of an issue... steep and narrow canyons are a problem as is triple canopy jungle. The spot has to get a rather...

Re: SPOT
We acquired a SPOT II last fall and I have been using it for hiking (but not climbing). It has been a huge relief for my spouse to know where I am and that it I am okay. She logs onto the spot web and can follow the track I am on, even when it leads to a post hike bar with Tibber. I send an OK messa...

Re: Looking for indoor climbing partners
Steve: Although Fritzie started this thread 2 years ago the info is still pretty accurate. The Phoenix Rock Climbing meetup group climbs indoors at PRG on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7pm. They also meet Wednesday night 7u pm at AZ on the Rocks in Scottsdale. There is an outdoor sport climbing eve...

Re: Reverse Flatiron?
Joe B has a route called "the ultimate ridge line" that I believe covers the hard part from Massacre up to the ridgeline trail. When you hit the ridgeline trail you would go west along it and bump into flatiron. Not a real popular way to get there but in haz terms it is doable
