Tucson... hard to beat Finger Rock trail for single or laps... and if a more scenic day desired... head up Pima Canyon and follow the ridge around to Bear Canyon? Alamogordo... "A" Trail for laps (I find myself back to doing that again as we head into 2018... hoping to x3 on Ortega Peak fi...

Re: How to improve one's sense of direction?
Oddly enough, in over 45 years of hiking, I've only been "lost" once... and that was when using a map and compass and miss identifying a major landmark. I seem to stay oriented by focusing on the bigger picture... not the canyon I'm hiking but on the range... all of the drainages and how t...

hmmm... pair usually last six weeks at most... why I buy cheapies. That is if I am hiking 4-5 days weekly. Avg Ten miles or less. 50 miles x 6= 300/400 miles. $25... That was at 190# with 40#+ pack... Now... 160#... guess I need to check it out. Cost per mile... interesting...

Re: Desert Rats: Will you begin a hike while it's raining?
I live in the desert because it is dry! That said... I do not cancel planned hikes... I may alter route to accommodate the rain... did that this week... headed out before light, in the rain. It rained the entire hike. Grew up in North Texas... 32" annually. I liked the rain and cold when I used...

If it is for training, hard to beat Finger Rock trail... steep, yet runnable... and long enough to do a reasonable workout. If you just want to score some nice height, the Pinnacles up Mt Lemmon Highway get you nicely lofted.

Re: Hike Preperation: Knowing your limits
I start completely out of shape... head up a trail for 15 minutes... turn back. After a day of rest, I head up adding 15 minutes. I pick steep trails. Within a month I may be logging 15 miles outings. If the motivation is there, I continue a progressive pattern until I can hit a 12,000' AEG day... m...

Re: The 2016!! Cyclical totals discussion thread.
1,000,000' AEG over a years time would not be all that difficult... just requires consistency and some luck. The problem is it also might take the fun out of hiking. 3,000' daily... done on a nice 900' per mile route... might use up only four hours. If you lived in Tucson, Finger Rock trail at over ...

We break the group if we are aware of the skills of all hikers... keep in touch via radios brought along for that purpose. We ask that the retreating group stay to the planned exit route so that we pick them up on our way out. We recently turned around short of the goal with a group of 23 hikers... ...

I broke a rib climbing (over compressed the chest down a chimney)... got to hear it snap! One month in and the knot in my chest is finally not a constant feeling. I think I'm ready to start working out again... slowly for the upper body. Seems to be healing faster than with previous breaks...???
