Re: Dan Becker Grand Canyon rescue

@joebartels Saw a Garmin inreach in the video but footage shows 911 cell phone call as maybe Garmin takes issue with funding SAR's for youtubers depending on your SAR plan? They changed SAR plans recently with the purchase of GEOS. It was interesting to see how well plowed NK was on Feb 18 and NPS ...

Re: Dan Becker Grand Canyon rescue

Looked liked a movie making group of 4 or 5 with 2 having the very good MSR Lightning Ascent snowshoes where often they could of taken turns breaking trail but not easy on NK especially after dark. Looks like things got extreme above Supai Tunnel after dark but the exposure in the ice fall area look...

Re: Arizona Trail 800 Mile Showdown Light VS McKnight FKT

Mike's bio on the site above states "He is also known for being the first person to run 100 miles without consuming any calories"

How is this possible?

Re: Arizona Trail 800 Mile Showdown Light VS McKnight FKT

@xsproutx Thank you for the info as previous FKTs and a few races seem to use SPOT as the tracking device. That's what Stringbean Joe used for his AZT FKT. From the website it appears they are using legendstracking using cell service like you stated. Interesting the spots in the GC it's able to con...

Re: Arizona Trail 800 Mile Showdown Light VS McKnight FKT

Just noticed McKnight made it in 24hrs from Utah to GC NK and is doing his R2R now. Does the official AZT FKT follow SK or BA as forecasted high today is only 80F with clouds so SK would be a time saver? Also noticed their website does not work well with Chrome for me but Edge seems to work and prov...

Arizona Trail 800 Mile Showdown Light VS McKnight FKT

Aravaipa Running has been streaming this event which could be good for the AZT and it's for charity. Highlights each day till complete Jamil is saying. Hype began a few days ago with a coin toss with the winner picking the direction of travel and the loser picked the start time. One started today at...

Re: RFP North Rim Lodge. etc.

ADOT and NPS lockdown their sections of Hwy 67 in late November depending on snowfall and NPS won't reopen things until May 15 even if road is completely dry. Lodge is open May 15 to Oct 15 I have needed 4x4 one Nov 15 to navigate the unplowed hwy with 6+ inches of snow where cars were using chains....

Re: Guilty plea for man who led outsized Grand Canyon hike group

There's a popular group of about 100 here in Phx who were caught doing this same thing but NPS did little even after sending their R2R enforcement ranger lady from the park to his home in Scottsdale. Yes, NPS actually has someone who specializes in R2R enforcement targeting at least some of the bigg...

Re: 2021 Fire Season

the beautiful post fire moonscape of Mt Ord along slate creek at FR27 and the miles of charred guardrails is quite a memory. luckily they didn't moonscape FR626, GPSJOE's powerline route, or the Ord highground above 6k ft. I am often surprised at how nice an area can be even after fire. Some are com...

Re: SPOT or Garmin InReach??

A little off topic but but I just noticed in the fine print for the Garmin InReach GEOS SAR coverage which I think is an optional extra fee that Expeditions, time trials, and/or record attempts--FKT's are NOT covered. I believe SPOT also using GEOS. They define Expeditions as – An organized journey ...

Re: SPOT or Garmin InReach??

retired my spot a couple years ago as for a few extra bucks the extra piece of mind could be a lifesaver.

spot uses the problematic Globalstar satellites vs Iridium for Inreach.

2 minute extreme tracking upgraded plan for inreach works well and 2 way sms is a godsend compared to spot.

Re: Cocodona 250 Mile Race from Black Canyon to Flagstaff via Mt Elden

I don't know the winner or if he is boastful in his win, but I think 250 miles on foot, and those particular 250 miles, in 3 days speaks for itself. Seems just as impressive as someone who can spend 60 days out in the woods with nothing but a pocket knife. Just two very different races with very di...

Re: 430+ Doing R2R Last Saturday

The common theme is these violators seem to like the attention as that was the case with the group of 75 organized by a Phx guy for many years until NPS showed up at his home. NPS is aware of many R2R event violators and eventually pays them a visit but for some reason it takes often many years and ...

Not my cup of tea either but I know we have lots of AZT+Crown King+Prescott+Verde Valley+Sedona+Mt Elden & dog fans which were spotlighted/livestreamed throughout. Several crews had their dogs and families along to re-energize them as crew while there are stopped at major checkpoints along the c...

Wasn't this person a former HAZ member? Went on a few runs with someone who got busted and banned for two years. He had three busses full of family members and friends if I recall. Then printed t-shirts for all 150 of them. different group but same GC ranger's investigation as that character arrang...

Re: South Rim Trail /Trailhead updates

@SpiderLegs appears it has changed as too many people thinking it's cool to bring large groups into the canyon so now you need a permit or risk having NPS show up at your home. The change due to COVID appears to be no groups larger than 10 are being allowed but SUP is still required for 10 or less ...
