Hiked alone, got hurt confession
Broke off three teeth and chipped one of the front. Lower lip is a bit cut up. What's weird is I don't remember falling or what made me fall, just the pain of the rock smashing into my face. I really shouldn't have made Cibecue my first road trip hike of the summer but I was so excited to have my Je...

Last update was from the wife 9 hours ago: Thank you to everyone helping look for my husband, chris. As of right now, they have a s&r dog out looking, a rider on horseback and about 14 people on foot. They are trying to get a s&r team on top and they plan on working through the night. Chris ...

Re: Lyme disease in AZ
I used to foster Basset Hounds (for a rescue organization) and almost every newly rescued dog was infested with ticks. These were all local dogs, mostly found wandering in the deserts just outside of town. By infested I'm sure Paul meant a hundred or so of them. I foster for a local rescue, strays ...

Dare I mention another book I like---"Cadillac Desert" Marc Reisner ( spelling?). Ah, yes. Also, "Chinatown," starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, etc. Reisner also wrote "Game Wars" about the devastation of American wildlife due to poor game management and poaching....

Re: Phoenix Magazine (July 2011)
Phoenix Magazine has Hunter Creek near / as a part of Gordon Creek Falls. (Which I know Gordon is already on HAZ ...) It's a combo of two hikes off Colcord Road for a day trip. Hunter Creek was my first attempt at hiking. Truly sad. The directions are to turn right on Colcord, drive ".3 miles ...

Re: Monsoon chatter
When I first moved to Phoenix in '83 the monsoons seemed to come nearly every day of the season, slamming the valley for 15 minutes after 5 PM like clockwork, putting out massive lightning strikes then evaporating in sunlight almost as fast as they hit. The humidity was bad but the storms were fanta...

@teva joe I posted some nice photos from Gordon Creek back in '09 under the title "Gordon Canyon Creek" (I thought 'falls' seemed a bit generous). http://hikearizona.com/photoset.php?ID=8319 Is there some way you could put my photos under your new listing? P.S. I feel slighted. ;) It is g...

Re: Dog AND Child Friendly Day trips?!
I just posted my trip to Gordon Creek Falls today and it might work for you. It's 1.3 relatively easy miles and offers what girls of all ages love; pretty wildflowers and nice dog tolerant horses (when they're around). It's 25 miles east of Payson off Colcord Road.

If it's anything like the Wilderness First Aid class held in Phoenix last January, it's a good class. Don't forget to clap!

I researched this site and others last fall and opted to get the Keen Targhee II for winter hikes. Keem had a lot of positive reviews. Only got a couple hikes in but I'm very rough on everything and the shoes were tested. Very comfortable, no blisters. I'm reckless in summer, might be better off in ...

On the switchbacks Sunday afternoon I felt a couple warm drafts of rising air that had a sweet, floral smell. They were gone instantly but I didn't get a putrid hit from them.

Re: Beeline Hwy or Hwy 87
Hi, I'm a newbie here. Mostly browsing the site for good info while I get myself in trouble on my own out on the trails. It's been addictively fun. I had the same experience on 87 three weekends ago. It was a perfect storm of bad events, an AC hose blew on our way up but didn't stop us, then one of ...
