Re: Missing hiker in Mazatzals

This is terrible, I want to help.
I can come down from Overgaard this afternoon however I don't want to hamper the efforts by clogging up the area. Having never been to the TH how is the parking situation?

Re: Sightings/Encounters?

My friend Greg has a story about the "Mogollion Monster" that he tells every time we camp. Some scary story that his boy scout troop leader told him when he was a kid, then he heard the monster that same night. Probably nothing, but he is a very god story teller nonetheless. I remember th...

Re: Weird things in the Wild

The last time I was up at Reavis Ranch, I took a night hike up to the circlestone ruins. I'm pretty sure they were deer, I hope, but I was continuously seeing glowing green eyes just outside of my headlamps range. I tried flashing them with my camera but nothing would show up. It was pretty creepy ...

Re: Mexican Wolf numbers fall

azbackpackr you may be right and I stand corrected. When I get better with the photo album here I'll get them uploaded for all to see. I sent the pictures to USFWS Ecological Services in NM. Here is the response. "Hi Jack, Thanks for sending the pics. We have conflicting thoughts within the of...

Re: Mexican Wolf numbers fall

Ok, let's be clear before we go any further with this. If any of you are claiming to be seeing wolves outside of the wolf recovery area (either in the White Mtns of AZ, and Gila Wilderness of New Mexico) I am not going to believe you. Or, I am going to think you may have seen one of those pet wolve...

Re: backpack in payson area

Chevelon Canyon is one of my favorite day hikes or overnight packing trips. Woods Canyon Lake spillway to Willow Springs spillway can be done is a day but the hike from Woods Canyon lake to Chevelon Lake takes 2-3 days depending on if you stop and smell the roses. The side canyons are just asking to...

Re: Mexican Wolf numbers fall

With all the rain up here the Varmint or varmit population will sky rocket. Predators will follow with population growth.
This happened many years ago with the Mountain Lion population and will also help the Wolf population.

Re: Trash on the Trails--what did you haul out?

Up on the Rim Mostly beer cans old whiskey bottles. Over the last few years I have been finding many birthday party balloons still inflated. A few miles up towards Bear Canyon Lake right off the road I was picking up 10's of beer can's and found about 30 lbs of live 22 and 9mm rounds still in the bo...

@PageRob Two years ago A friend and I watch one near Gentry Canyon for over 30 minutes digging for ground moles. The wind was right and as the wolf faced away we moved in a little. Got some good pictures and then he got wind of us and headed off into the woods. Near the point where Woods Canyon cre...

Re: Hells gate #37 south end

Last time I was down that trail it got pretty rough the last 3/4 mile or so. Loose rocks for quite some ways makes the climb out risky. Road from young wasn't to bad but got progressively worse up to the Wilderness sign on the jeep trail. Haigler has a surprise for people willing to hike up a ways f...
