Re: Looking for spectacular views - 2.5 day hike in AZ, mid May
@MetalBackpacker I would go with Zimmerman for getting both the best sunset and sunrise views at on location. Zimmerman is higher than Asbestos point and partially blocks the view of the eastern horizon from Asbestos point. Thanks for the info! @MetalBackpacker I don't know much about hanging, but ...

Re: Gila Wilderness question(s)
I was there, at the beginning of the Whitewater-Baldy fire in 2012. I hiked on the western side, in the Mogollon Mountains. Not sure if the fires made it over to the more popular east side. On day 5 of 6, I was on the top of Grouse Mountain overlooking one of the two small fires that eventually merg...

Re: Looking for spectacular views - 2.5 day hike in AZ, mid May
One last question, for those of you who have been up to both Asbestos Point and Zimmerman Point(Grasshopper, Oregon_hiker, Cannondalekid), etc. Taking into account the views from each, with sunrise and sunset photography in mind, which would you camp at? I'm leaning towards Asbestos right now. Which...

@Oregon_Hiker
Thanks for the additional info. I remember reading about the water being a little more clear at Cold Canyon Spring vs Edward Spring. That must have been your report. Well I think I have everything covered then. All I have to do is get through the rest of this week... Getting excited!

Re: Looking for spectacular views - 2.5 day hike in AZ, mid May
Grasshopper and Oregon_hiker, thanks for the info. The two sections of off trail hiking on day one between Aztec Mtn and Edwards Spring, I could always just use the 4wd road and trail head downhill from Murphy TH if need be. I looked at that section on satellite and as you said, it looks fairly bare...

Re: Looking for spectacular views - 2.5 day hike in AZ, mid May
Well I spent the afternoon putting this together in the Sierra Anchas: http://caltopo.com/m/f8qb Park at Parker Creek TH. Camp at Edwards Spring night one. Camp near Zimmerman Point night 2. Down FR 489/Pocket Creek to 288, back to my car at Parker Creek TH. Should be around 25 miles. Looks like it ...

Re: Looking for spectacular views - 2.5 day hike in AZ, mid May
To be honest, I almost always hike in wilderness areas due to the ease of logistics, and I'm not really up on national park rules and regs. I'm planning this last minute and just figured trying to obtain permits would be too much of a pain. However, I noticed the Sierra Anchas are basically the same...

Re: Looking for spectacular views - 2.5 day hike in AZ, mid May
Looks like the Reynolds Creek TH is accessible by car, so that's my best bet for the Sierra Ancha. Also looks like there's a lot of trees up there on the rim, I take it no problem for hanging a hammock? I can always bring my tent if there's any doubt, but would much rather sleep in the hammock. Any ...

Re: Looking for spectacular views - 2.5 day hike in AZ, mid May
Thanks for the suggestion, looks like some good options there. How are the roads to the trailheads there? I'll be in a rental, something like a Chevy Spark or some tiny little economy car.

Looking for spectacular views - 2.5 day hike in AZ, mid May
Going to fly into Phoenix next weekend and I'm looking to pack in the most spectacular views possible on a weekend hike. Plane lands around 5:30pm on a Friday and looking to drive to my destination that night. Sleep in the car, at the trailhead or hike a short distance on the trail and camp. Plane l...

Re: 8 Days in the Supes, another long loop
Tried uploading my gps route here, but for some reason the tracks won't show up... only the waypoints. I was going to upload a triplog as well, but the system seems to only allow to choose from a preset list of hikes... don't know where I would put a hike like mine. I posted some pics and info of th...

Re: 8 Days in the Supes, another long loop
@friendofThundergod I'm bummed too... would have loved to get a bit of a tour from a knowledgeable local. Sounds like you have been spending quite a bit of time out there, can't blame you. That wood was still there at clover, man that really helped me out that day. Did 17 miles, all the way from th...

Re: 8 Days in the Supes, another long loop
Hey everyone, just finished this hike, sitting in the airport right now waiting out a 3.5 hour layover.us airways lost my checked bag(which was all my hiking gear) and didn't find it for 24hrs. As a result I had 7 days instead of 8 for the hike and skipped the off day. did the route as planned but s...

Re: First overnight trip in AZ
I'm in the process of planning my planning my first flight for a backpacking trip as well. I have always driven to trailheads, even across country. Here's some info that I dug up earlier tonight while planning my trip: lighters - carry on (yes), checked bag (no) knife - carry (no), check (yes) extra...

Thanks guys... looks like I won't have to worry about water too much. That's good to know. Of course I will check again before leaving. I can't wait to get out there!

Re: 8 Days in the Supes, another long loop
Thanks for the information. I don't have my dates set yet as I am still hunting for a good deal on airfare from Michigan and looking within a range of dates in early January. That's good news about west boulder canyon having water. I'll check again for recent water reports right before I leave too.

Thanks man, I have been going through your triplogs and pictures, and just made another post on my updated plans.friendofThundergod wrote:@MetalBackpacker
I did respond to your PM, this time of year I don't think any water will be an issue for most of winter now. Six days in Supes though will be fun man..

8 Days in the Supes, another long loop
I've been dying for a second chance at my failed attempt to hike a rather long loop in the Superstition Wilderness in March. I had another thread going here http://hikearizona.com/dex2/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=7466 about a long loop I had planned in the supes that didn't work out for me. I am going ...

Re: 6 Days in the Supes, questions about a LONG loop
Looks like I am going to have some time off around the holidays this year and and contemplating a winter hike somewhere warmer than Michigan. Since I never finished this hike in the supes earlier this year, I am considering giving it another go if everything works out logistically. It would be early...
