Re: Park loaded with Round-tailed Ground Squirrels
Hmmm... I first heard that it was a myth by two horse ranchers. Then I did my research afterwards and did not see any documented cases on it... Exactly where would one go to research "documented cases of horses getting injured by stepping into ground squirrel damaged soil"? My horse, and ...

Re: Park loaded with Round-tailed Ground Squirrels
They said that it is because the squirrels tunnel under the paths and it could hurt the horses. That's a myth. There's no evidence that animal burrows caused harm to any hoofed animal. I'm not suggesting that you thought that, but I wish the park officials would inform the public that this is not f...

Charleston is the site of a famous C4 crash in the 50s. Aviation archeologists still go up there and find plane crash debris.

CraftBeers - Is that the stuff that tastes like it's made from fermented sawdust and you drink it warm? ... ;) I find it difficult to drink beers at a pub/bar/tavern. Seems like their concept of "cold beer" means "about 50 degrees". That'll be seven dollars please. Plus tip. I li...

Re: Hey! My sprained foot's healing!
Thanks for posting again, I was wondering what happened to you. Thanks - I got a little weirded out by rattlesnakes. Once I started seeing more than two on every day hike (McDowell Sonoran Preserve) I quit for the season. Once it cools off I'll get going again, I'm sure. For now I'm getting up earl...

Low Cal Beer that I LIKE!
I just had a few "Miller 64"s this past week. Darn they're pretty good. I generally like Corona, Corona light is second. Don't care much at all for dark beer, really don't like the ones that taste like wheat or grass clippings or strong yeast. Just simple, light amber Mexican. 64 calories....

Hey! It's healing even more! I've been doing more and more barefoot treadmill. DIstance/Time/Speed all increasing gradually over the last 3 months. I can really feel my feet getting stronger. I've always done quite a bit of treadmill with shoes on. But this barefoot thing has made a noticible improv...

Deep Tissue Work in Phoenix?
I've heard people talk about getting "Deep Tissue" manipulation/massage for chronic muscle problems. I've got a regular massage therapist but she really doesn't do any specific deep tissue work. Can anyone recommend a practitioner in north Phoenix/Scottsdale that can get into my darn bicep...

OK - if I could see the screen in sunlight, then I'd say it's a great idea. My Samsung is essentially useless with sol shining on it. Makes it very hard to take a picture of a fast critter or other opportune photo target. To view a map on my phone, I have to hide it under my hat like the old time st...

Re: Meet Earl a Hikers Best Friend!
I'm having trouble seeing what it does that my Android phone won't do. If you took my Samsung phone, removed the phone part and replaced it with the FRS/GMRS radio, that seems like what this gizmo would be. That "up to 20 mile range" for FRS is pretty hyped. 2 or 3 miles would be more real...

Re: Loop 2002 extension thru South Mountain - do you care?
I'm ok with it. In my lifetime I've seen I-10 get completed through Phoenix. 40 yrs ago it didn't go through. I've seen the 51 and the 101 and 202 get built. Every one of them cost us some housing, some natural areas, a lot of dollars. But it didn't take long before people dug the idea of driving fr...

@SgtLumpy You did not opt for the 4 x 4 version of the Astro? No, I bought it as a stock, blue, soccer mom van. I really had no intention of turning it into an off road vehicle. The 4WD version of the Astro is not a true 4x4, it's an AWD. Built more for ice/snow and occasional loss of traction on r...

What Kind of Spider is This?
Photo attached. Sorry I don't have a photo from the top/back to make ID easier. Anyone know what kind of spider this is? There are gazillions of them along the urban paths that I've been walking lately. Typically out in the daytime. Seem to have a web that resembles that of a blk widow (seemingly un...
