Re: Thru-hike NOBO planning
Hello! March 15th is probably going to be your best bet for missing the bulk of the snow if you need a solid unchanging date. March 1st could work, but it is totally dependent on the intensity of the previous winter. The southern half of the trail may have lingering snow at the higher elevations dur...

Re: A hard year to hike the PCT
I just made it out of the High Sierra via Kearsarge yesterday. The heat wave has made rivers out of all the creeks. Above 10,000ft we were either walking on snow or through water. We even had a "Seasonal Creek" ford which was challenging. The first 2 days out of Kennedy Meadows, the trail ...

It's been a while since my last physics class, but I don't see how this can decrease net energy expenditure. There is no net external force acting on the pack+human, so the total energy required to move the pack from point A to point B on the trail can't be different from a non-mechanized pack of t...

By 'touring' do you mean thru/section hiking, or a series of day hikes? Your post is pretty short, and doesn't give us much to work in terms of figuring out what exactly you're trying to accomplish. In May, most of the segments below AZ-87 (Beeline) are going to start getting consistently HOT. I hop...

I second that stretch. Or Picketpost to Pine. In my humble opinion, both these stretches probably have the most scenery per-mile.rcorfman wrote:Starting at Patagonia and ending at Oracle would get you the mileage you seek and put a gateway town at both ends of your hike.

ZPacks and Enlightened Equipment have robbed me blind... 100% worth it, though.flagscott wrote:16228548_1843459835922638_1449941342351261696_n.jpg
Of course, the most expensive gear comes from cottage manufacturers, but I can definitely relate to this.

There was a big pile of trash down there (unfortunately) when me and @The_N went through in January. Did you see the ripped up sleeping bag and garbage spread out across the trail, or has that been cleaned up? It looked like someone was camping there for a night or two, then walked out without takin...

Without a long hitch, you don't really have any other options. You're so close by the time you hit Jacob's Lake you could eat a big meal at the restaurant and grab a couple of items from the store. You haven't stated what kind of pace you'll be moving at, but most should be able to make that stretch...

I have recently bought the app and although I cannot yet comment on using it on the trail, it has already been very useful for me for planning the hike! And I think it will be even better on the trail. On the trail, although I hope to use mainly the app, I want to have paper maps as well (for safet...

Re: Weighing weight miles
I think this line of thinking breaks down a little when you consider some people like to pack as light as possible AND backpack long continuous miles. I'm more impressed by someone who backpacks thousands of continuous miles with a 25 lbs pack (including multiple days of food, and water) vs someone ...

Overall I can't complain about this year! :D I hit all my hiking goals set last year. I didn't set any specific stats goals, but I'm happy where I stand. At the beginning of December I saw I was close to 2000 miles and decided to shoot for it. I thought I would hit 400k AEG but now I'm thinking most...

I am going to do Oracle to Picket Post in late January. I have a question- if I leave water in the supply box at the Florence-Kelvin Hwy- will it freeze in January inside the box? What if I insulate it somehow? At that time of year I should have the box all to myself. I have been up to the box 2x t...

Sitting at the BCO at GCNP about to head in for an overnighter. It's gonna be cold and rainy all day. So I guess so... Grew up in Northern Utah. Not particularly wet, but probably more so than AZ. I've learned to work with the weather instead of dodging it on my long hikes. You really don't have muc...

NOAA rain totals for the Supes are around 1/4 inch, up to 1/2 an inch in some spots. Another 1/4 - 1/2 an inch predicted for tonight (looking at Rogers Trough TH forecast). When that much rain falls, some big areas turn into oceans of deep, sloppy mud. One of them is the last few miles of the Firel...

Re: Fire allowed on the trails?
State Trust Land allows you to hike on the trail, but I don't believe it allows camping or other use without purchasing the annual permit, in which case it is ok. In the case of the AZT, I believe they have been granted a "right of way" and camping is allowed on State Trust land if you ar...
