Re: Weighing weight miles
So, if I'm looking at the self-propelled totals, is there a way to differentiate between those who racked up 90% of their milage on ritualistic 'exercise' hikes close to home and those who tallied 90% of their milage on actual adventures in wilderness areas and whatnot? That's the thought this threa...

Re: Horton / Tonto creek cattle drive?
I ran into a rancher just east of Tonto Creek recently who was out riding and checking fences. He's does this every year in an effort to keep cattle away from the creek during the busy summer months. They just didn't do too well at preventing that this year. If you go West from the Hatchery TH, the ...

Re: $500 EpiPen
@azbackpackr I was just wondering about that option. Epinephrine isn't expensive, it's the Epipen delivery system that is costly. If you can get a vial and a 1cc syringe you'd be saving a ton of money. Just have to be experienced enough to prepare an injection quickly. I'd imagine a 'pre-loaded' sy...

@sajor75 I don't know what you're waiting for. There are plenty of places to camp and truly the insects aren't bad compared to other parts of the state. Sure, it's warm (low to mid 90's for a high, mid 50s to low 60s for a low) but again, not bad compared to other parts of the state. There have bee...

Re: General Crook Trail 1st time hike - Questions
@sajor75 Sounds like you might be more interested in hiking the Highline Trail. Gen Crook seems like it's almost entirely a road walk these days. There will be traffic that time of year as well so you might be eating some dust. Highline will offer the water and slightly warmer overnight temps. It w...

@up2top There are some good campsites along the east banks of the East Verde once you get to Washington Park. Just cross the river and follow it up stream. There is a faint trail over there or just stay next to the river. If you fall short of Washington Park there is a nice stretch of Pine forest pe...

Control Rd - FS 64 Payson
Just a heads up, there is a big CC Craigin project underway from Washington Park down to Third Crossing. Drilling, blasting, ect along Control Rd and FR 32. Lots of equipment in the area and signage warns of 15min delays.

#26 & #27 are free of snow. Not sure about Blue Ridge or Mormon Lake though.

@ALMAL Allergery season is off to a strong start up here as well. Along with the netipot (sinus rinse) I use the homeopathic 'Rim Country Tree Mix' tincture and the 'Mountain Air' essential oil blend from Herb Stop in Pine. The tincture is for tree pollen allergies including Cedar and Juniper. They...

Is that hail or graupel or something else? I heard someone mention 'snow' in the valley earlier.

Speaking of animal battles. I took this pic along the side of the paved road that goes up North Mtn during the summer. Not sure what's going on here but they were tangled sure looked to be fighting at first.

Re: Is camping in a ruin illegal?
Interesting. I always thought it was illegal. Aside from that issue it can also be hazardous to your health to camp in a ruin. Part of the structure could collapse on you and rodent feces in the air could sicken you.

Re: Knee Troubles
I am familiar with this ailment. It hurts more on the downhill because your knee is turning inward and causing that band to flare up if that is indeed the problem. Hiking is still possible if you can tolerate the pain, although it will prolong symptoms. I think wearing a heavy pack will only worsen ...

Re: Balancing Hiking with Strength Training
I used to feel the same pressure to balance lifting and hiking. Now I just make sure I'm doing at least one of em per day and I'm happy. Leg day mid week so I have plenty of time to recover before weekend hikes. I've gained 20lbs of lean mass in the last year but now my dilemma is this...what are th...

I recently moved back to AZ from CT and would also mention Devil's Hopyard, Sleeping Giant, Talcott Mountain State Park/ Avon Mountain (closest to Farmington), Soapstone in Ellington, Valley Falls or even Shenipsit Trail for a little cross country hike. They have 'rails to trails' which is old railr...
