Re: Very bad overgrowth in the Mazatzal

I must say the scope and scale of the immature BS above surprised me. But that I guess is the internet and I should have expected no less. I guess I am too old fashioned for these types of forums. When us folks who actually hike a lot interact we think it normal to pass on pertinent info on water so...

Far Walker

Txs. The old broken back is aching and I need to let it heal up a bit. Will be back on trail (depending on healing of course) in a week or two I hope.

Re: Is it cheating?

garyc57 Like has been mentioned above if you are a north bound AZT hiker it really matters not which trail you take of the BA SK options. So I would recommend the SK since it eliminates any concerns. If you are a south bound AZTer it makes a BIG difference which trail you choose. I just did a north ...

Very bad overgrowth in the Mazatzal

Hi all, I just walked from Utah to Rt 87. I wanted to point out (and this may be common knowledge to all but me) that the overgrowth in the Mazatzal is bad. REALLY BAD. For anyone hiking this wilderness there will be miles (maybe 10?) of serious overgrowth. The trail is close to lost at many times a...

Javelina encounter

This morning about sunrise I was hiking in the mountains near my home in Prescott and had quite an encounter with a javelina. I was hiking along in an area with heavy manzanita and heard a weird grunt sound behind me. When I looked back over my shoulder I saw a big black animal coming at me. Since I...

Re: Looking for other 2015 AZT sobo Thru-hikers

Goliath and I (Wyoming) have sort of settled on departing Sept 4th. We decided on that date to avoid hitting the Grand Canyon on Labor Day weekend. Seemed like a good idea as that place will be crazy then.

Re: Looking for other 2015 AZT sobo Thru-hikers

Hi, Wyoming here.

Goliath and I have rough plans to depart SOBO sometime in early Sept (set at 1 Sept right now). There is also a guy named Steve who's journal is on TrailJournals who is intending to start early Sept.

Re: Best topo maps to load into GPS

Wow. Thanks for all the effort. I am new to this so my description likely is causing confusion. I have all the AZT waypoints and tracks downloaded onto my tablet and am using the free Caltopo maps to display them on. I guess this is referred to as the 'base' map? If so, then what I was trying to ask...

Grasshopper

Txs. I guess I am confused by the ATA site as I got the impression that their maps were just pdf files and not the file types needed by the Backcountry Navigator program I have.

Best topo maps to load into GPS

I am wondering for an AZT thru hike which topo maps everyone here has found to be the best to have loaded on one's GPS. Right now I just have one of the free map sets you can download from the internet. It seems ok but I am just curious if people have found a specific one the best. I will be buying ...

Re: Oak Tree Fire burning near Sonoita

Actually if the descriptions of where the fire is are correct (and my map work also) then the fire is less than 2 miles from the trail and maybe just a mile.

Oak Tree Fire burning near Sonoita

News reports mention a 2000 acre fire near Sonoita. About 10 miles north of town along Rt 83. This appears to be within a few miles of the AZT.
