Cochise Stronghold Campground Questions

Post by louie »

Wondering if I can get my 25ft RV down this road and if the campsites will fit my 25ft RV? Any thoughts? Much thanks!

I haven't been there in years, but the website says trailers only up to 16 feet. You don't say if your RV is a motorhome or a trailer. But I would think it applies to both. Why not call the ranger district and ask them?

I was just there after Christmas. The campground won't accommodate a 25footer. A truck with a 12' trailer did sort of fit. Low trees and only one small "group" puilout. You can get down most of the road. I made a wrong turn just before the campground and ended up to the west of the road. This undeveloped area just before the campground has some areas that will accommodate you as long as the weather is dry. The turnoff is about a mile before the turn to the campground. So you will be a mile or two from the campground and the trailhead. No amenities. No water, no portapotties, no dump stations. There are fire pits. People with bigger rigs seem to come here and stay longer than they can at the campground. I doubt that the Rangers will tell you about this area. Let me know when you are going and maybe I can guide you in and drive you to the TH in my 4Runner :)

Thank you much for the tips. I'm planning on calling the ranger station, but always like to get feedback from hike AZers. It's a 25ft class C. From conversations in the past with the forest service and the 16ft limit info provided on the website for various campgrounds it is something that doesn't seem to be set in stone. Some will easily accommodate bigger rigs than the 16ft and others will not. Thanks again.

I think that they have trimmed the Campground so that you can get through the campground. The Ranger Station will probably tell you not to try. (Don't sue me on this if you get some scratches0. And you will find the "group site" almost at the end as you go counterclockwise through the campground on your right. I didn't know what a 25" RV looked like. I think you will fit in the site at the end. If a pickup and 5th wheeler can fit, you can probably fit. That has got to be about 21' and it had room to spare. But if you don't, no worries. Go back down the road, and now turn left and go into that undeveloped area. Many of the prime areas were taken when I was there. Some with big RVs. Others with truck/5 wheeler combos. I am glad that I was driving a 4Runner but I could have navigated it in an RV.

Hey anybody else - any opinions?

@Al_HikesAZ Thank you for the tip on the undeveloped sites outside the Campground. Much prefer that option. It's free and I don't have to stress about keeping my noisy kids quiet.

Ooops. Thinking back on it. He might not have been in a camp site. He might have sort of parked across 10 parking spots. Cruise through, check it out, and then head back down to the undeveloped sites.

Don't worry about quiet. I was camped next to Norwegians. The father Eynor and his sons Odin, Paul and Ian. They know how to party. I was a little pissed at about 2am but was thankful at 8am when Eynor jump started my 4runner.

Get there early and if it doesn't work head over to the Kartchner Cavern campground or to the Chiricahua NM campground.

No water @ CG, so plan accordingly.
I suggest the west side of Cochise off of Middle March Road just north of Tombstone - quite a few nice, free sites. Less shade (but you brought a house with you) - much better views and solitude.

My hubby and I camped there several years ago, pulled in there with a 34' 5th wheel behind a super duty 4 door truck. It was tight, but we were able to get in and out. We decided after we were there is when they put up the 16' limit signs. The signs were not there when we went in, but were there when we went out. I would think though, if we could get in there with that 34 footer, you can get in there with yours. My parents were with us, they have a 28' class C motor home. They didn't have any problems. We didn't realize the undeveloped sites were there until after we had already set up, or we would have gone there instead. We drove into that area, several nice sites with fire pits, etc.

@chulavista
Thank you for the info. I ended up taking my jeep, but did take note of those sites outside the campground that could easily accommodate my RV for future reference.
