Water in Garnet canyon

Post by robxxx »

Hi I have a permit for an out and back trip from south bass to garnet canyon to Toltec beach. I’m trying to find water reports for garnet canyon. Does anyone know of recent data ? Ideally the rangers would know but usually don’t. I’m not going until March 7 but must have a read on this otherwise it’s too hard thanks

Garnet's water can sometimes/often be salty; be sure to try a small amount ahead of drinking a bunch, or.. :sk:
Early March (Pasture Wash notwithstanding) is about the optimum water conditions in the Gems, I would say your chances are very good to great. If you plan to day-hike from Toltec out to Elves Chasm I would likely get water there, as it is better that any of the drainages' or River.

Oh yeah I remember that road ! My car cant handle that wet. Do you know if one can drive to the trailhead ? I heard the reservation was closed for virus reasons and one had to walk 7mi to the trailhead. I didn't get a notice in the permit notes.

There is a work-around route that skips the rez; it is likely pretty pronounced by now as it has been 2 years (and still counting).
There is, I believe another discussion on this forum that discusses recently accessing S.B. T/H.

@robxxx
there are a couple of ways to drive there, but they aren't compliant with the MVUM...and you'd need a high clearance 4WD vehcile, and even then I would not drive it if the roads were wet
Civilization is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there
