Grand Gulch - Finished!

Post by PaleoRob »

Alright, in addition to the 4th SAPDR ( viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3663 ) I'm looking at a March Grand Gulch backpacking trip, and wondering if anyone would be interested in coming along. I've got permits for the 28th-30th, in Bullet, out Government, for four people. We can get more if needed. We'll be averaging about 6.5 miles a day, with our first day being the longest, about 7.5 miles with the remainder of the 12.5 miles taking place over the other two days. Total mileage is about 20.
For some information about Bullet: http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=1283
Anyone?

KGRS works for me. Opens at 8am, so any time around or after then works for me.

Is trailhead access 4wd only? If not I can take my little kia that gets 44 mpg so it won't cost much.
I am more than happy to ride with anyone! I am quiet, but with a fun personality. I do have a hint of scarcasm, when needed. :D (just let me know) Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Got my permit confirmation packet in the mail today. As of Spring '08, all backpackers are required to watch a 10 minute video at KGRS before picking up their permit; so I guess that means the earlier we can get together at KGRS, the sooner we can get that out of the way and hit the trail. This is new since my last backpack up there.
I haven't had time to call BLM and increase our group size yet. We've got 4 permits set, so on Monday (when I have the day off), I'm going to call and get two more (unless I hear more firm yeses and nos from folks, I will adjust the number accordingly).

I think I'm pretty much gonna be devoted to this. Even if the weather is still colder, now that I have a compression sack for my bag I know I can pack enough for 3 days without too much trouble.

Good deal! Weather should be pretty nice, barring any unforeseen storms.

Would be nice to have good weather for sure but I feel much better now if it goes south since I got those Frogg Toggs.

Update: another friend (not on site yet) has decided to join up on this trip, so I'll be picking up a few extra permits on Mon.

3 more permits confirmed, so now we've got enough for everyone who has confirmed on the board + my friend, and then an additional one for anyone on the "maybe" list. Hooray!

If it's not too late I am a definite yes! Sounds great, is it too late to RSVP and request a permit?

Not too late; that'll be all the permits I have, but that would be enough. Make sure you select the Committed button, Jackie.
oliverr99: my friend who isn't on the board but is coming is another female as well, so there's three then. And she's also a teacher!

Sorry I'm new to this, is there really a "committed" button or is that just a reference to a joke someone else made earlier? Also... How do you know I am a teacher? Sorry I don't remember filling out an "about me" section, but I could be mistaken and absent minded...

Effectively, yes. There is an "Add Me" button in the "Committed" and "Interested" columns. Once you've checked one, a similar button will appear for you in the "Cancelled" column if you want to bail out.

Edit: you have to scroll up to the top (where the names are listed) to see those boxes.

Sorry, I forgot to watch this board more often. The end of March just seems so far away... So all permits are snagged? Let me know if more can be gotten or what I can do to get one myself. And shuttles out of PHX with a spot open? How cold do you think it'll get at night, 30s?

Jackie: I'm pretty sure Rob is referring to his other female friend being a teacher.
Yea, canyoneering is an extreme sport... EXTREMELY dramatic!!! =p

Yeah, the one's I've got reserved are all spoken for at this moment. March is sneaking up on us! I can't really afford to try and pick up any more permits myself at the moment, but if you call the BLM Monticello office, you should be able to pick up a couple more. Their number is (435) 587-1510. Temps at night will probably be in the 30's, yeah.

Jackie: My friend Sarah, who isn't registered on the board, is a teacher, as is oliverr99 (IIRC). But if you are too, talk about a wild coincidence, eh?

One of 'em's for you, Jackie. Everyone who is listed under "committed" should have one.

Anyone who is going to be unable to come, please give me 14 days notice so I can call BLM and get a credit for the unused permit (if no one else wants to come).
