What to do with arsonists?
Okay, now is a time to vent my frustrations...
After hearing the news reports that the Rodeo fire was intentionally started, by a fire fighter no less, I began to think about what will happen to these stupid, inconsiderate, no-brain idiots (I can go on, but will save you from my rants) :verymad: . Most likely a fine and some time in prison. However, is that enough? The Rodeo-Chediski fire has ravaged hundreds of thousands of acres of land, devesatated the lives of hundreds of people, and cost millions of dollars. I am curious, if the decision to punish these people were in your hands, what would you do?
Jeff

You forgot one little caveat to that scenario - you have to provide some type of immunity for the residents. That gives them a little more freedom with which to operate...
It would be interesting to see what they would do - however, I'm betting the majority of them would probably settle for the convicted to provide all the manual his/her body and soul can handle, free of charge, helping to rebuild all the homes lost. Then spend the next 50 years planting new trees and nursing the surrounding area back to health and beauty.

Besides arsonists, what about idiots in general? Like the lady that started the Chediski fire. Should she be punished less than the BIA Firefighter who started the rodeo blaze?
Why isn't the lady who started that fire plastered all over the news?!! She better not get off scott free due to the fact that she has no brain. I'm very suprised that we have not heard anything about her.
I'm curious has anyone?

Same thoughts here Pixelfrog. Was the area closed where she was found? Maybe they are doing a careful investigation before lowering the hammer. Was the news chopper negligent in hovering over the signal fire with it's rotor wash, blowing it all over?
I flew over the western edge of the fire area today and it looks much different than that of one week ago. A lot of the fire seems to be out on the extreme western edge leaving some very totally burnt areas but with quite a few patches of green trees left. I hope the bark is not cooked and the trees actually survive. If they get water soon maybe they can make it. I have not seen more than a little bit of the area so it may be much worse to the east. Smoke is everywhere up there, making visibility bad. The wind doesn't know where it wants to go, mixing the smoke up and dispersing it all over.

I'm pretty sure she was in a closed area. Don't know what effect the chopper had, and from the sound of it, it seems like they were responsible for not going back or informing the proper people about the location of the fire.
I heard on the TV this morning from a news chopper crew that there are "Significant" areas of unburned timber within the main fire area. They said maybe even 30% of the forest within the fire perimeter is unburned, which is a very good thing for wildlife, and hopefully encouraging news.

The fire fighter neads to be delt with nore harshly then the women that was trying to save her butt, as he stated the fire for proffit.
Being a x-USFS employee I would say that part of the blame for the size of the fire is due to the mismanagement of the forest. They have cowed down to the tree huggers stopped most logging and put out fires till the fuel load is to the point that we get what we got.
Form the 40's till the late 70's we put out even the smallest fire with the "Smoky the Bear" pollicy. Then we stopped the logging in the 80's we need one or the other to keep the forest healthy.
I do not want to hike through clear cuts or have roads all over the place but there needs to be some cutting to help keep the woods healthy if we do not have the fires. The cutting is better than the blow-ups that we are having now.
As to the magnitude of this fire it is big but it is still small when compared to the 1918 fire in Idaho. It burnned from the Salmon river to near the Canadian border. This fire was natural caused.

Mullets
Hey Snick, check out http://www.mulletsgonemad.xoasis.com. Is's a scarey thing! What punishment is enough for all the destruction+abject stupidity of any of these idiots? As I said before, our enemies must be laughing at us as we destroy our own country. It's just beyond comprehension.

You are a man after my own heart. Problem is there are no sawmills anymore and the government does not have the time or the money to really do it right. I think both need to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The guy is obviously an arsonist. The woman is ignorant and inept at best! Even giving her that benefit of the doubt, she was grossly negligent and caused lots of damage. Give her the 6 months in jail and $5k fine for being in a closed forest; then send her a bill for all the bushes, cactus, trees, homes, and belongings that were destroyed by her fire. That should keep her out of the forests for awhile.

Yep, Olesma: It is the motto of the "Possum Lodge" seen on the Red Green Show, PBS, 10:30pm Saturdays, a 30 minute expose of Canadian male behavior and other manly pursuits ("We're men..., but we can change...., if we have to..., I guess.") like the full use of duct tape.

Uhh, you lost me Snick33. What price are you refering to? Forest fires? If so, what does that have to do with freedom.?
