Catalina death march revival? October

Post by sarichter »

well seeing that this one died previously because of scheduling between various parties... i thought it might make sense to try to plan this one early and knock it out in the fall. anyone still interested?

October and November seem like the months most likely to work.

i'm in favor if jim still gets a ride at the top. i should be doing the up and down earlier in october so i wouldn't be against doing it again if i survive the first round. you fairly quick on your feet? i wouldn't want to drag this one out too long... not the biggest fan of hiking in complete darkness.
I'd normally take off early, putting in some uphill hours in the dark... my "normal" trail pace average is around 3mph over longer distances, but it really depends on the day and what has come before. I did Whitney a few weeks ago, climb took just over 5 hours with lots of picture taking...

... In this case I will be over in Tucson on the 18th doing Finger Rock Quad, which could beat me up, but with a full week to recover I should be fine. For me it is deciding whether or not to come prior to that weekend and hike with a friend, or to stay after the weekend and include this Cataline State park in the schedule as part of my training. First weekend in November I have a very hard day scheduled and this might be a nice lead in to that hike. If you're doing it earlier in the month, you may want to use the day for a different hike?
well i figure i might end up with another loop earlier in the month but to still reach the same summit. we will see. i'm all for doing this on the 25th now because i took monday off and plan on staying overnight to do some stuff the next day in town.

...Just got a confirmation from a friend in Tucson to do Thimble Peak on Tuesday the 13th, so I guess I'm headed over early instead of later in the month. I'll plan on doing the Catalina one day hike on Saturday the 10th, then the Pillars on Sunday the 11th... Thimble on the 13th... then Cathedral Peak on the 15th, with Finger rock falling on the 18th... that sounds like a firm plan assuming continued good health!

Not doing this one yet until I'm familar with Sutherland(as I've heard its changed :) )...but I am planning a ballon with Romero to Mt Lemmon down thru Wildernes of Rocks and back to Romero. I've done this whole route, but in 2 trips :) . If anyone is interested, PM for details and if you want a shuttle that may be an option for some. Starting in the dark on 10/10. Leaving valley pretty early.

I can't do it on the 25th. Have a finance final on Monday. Bummer. I'm still figuring out my schedule.
Bob I may be down for that if I don't head back to the Pinals on Friday. May hold off on the Pinals for another week because I know Dave wants to do it, and he'll be out of town this Friday.

ok i'm doing this the 10th... seeing as most people can't do the 25th anymore, let me know if other dates (later in the year or next spring sound better for others)... or if anyone is going to join us this Saturday.

I'm rescheduled to be over in Tucson December 10th through the 18th... than back the 25th, and can hang around until New Years if there is stuff to do. I'm committed on the 11th thru the 13th, but otherwise, wide open schedule if you want to do that hike that late in the year... temps might be nice.

i'm leaving this up for anyone to take over... or we can look at alternate routes too. i won't be up for the 25th now since my schedule jogged around and i'm doing this hike this saturday.

When there was a survey for this route, a couple of votes went to Sutherland. If your still interested in doing that...I want to check that out and do some recon for it. Anyone interested? Respond here or PM me.

With respect to Sutherland it depends on the date. I have football games the next 2 Saturdays. I'm really jonesing to get back to the Pinals this Friday because the color should be spectacular. May post that as an event.
