Need a hike outside of coronado nat'l forest

Post by pringlecan »

I'm scrambling to find something to hike Sunday!

I spend a lot of time in the Santa Rita's with my 2 year old daughter strapped to my back. With the upcoming closure my plans for a Mt Wrightson peak visit with some friends have been ruined. Is there a place I can go with a similar difficulty rating?

Thank you guys in advance. I hope the rains come soon.

Saguaro west will be open, not the Rincon (east) district, though. Wasson Peak is possibly, but you know it will be hot. Saturday might only be 98, so it's doable. So far, the Apache NF half of the A-S is closed, but you can go to the Gila just over the NM state line, or the Prescott NF, the Coconino NF, the Sitgreaves area near Show Low, and the Apache Reservations. Locally, I suggest Wasson Peak.

I do Wasson all the time in the summer. Just get to the trailhead by 6 AM, hike up at a steady pace, and you'll be fine. You should be back down by 830 before the real heat hits, plus you will be moving downhill and not working.

x2 - it's completely do-able. Starting on the Esparanza side is a little windier and cooler, too...

With a small child you really have to be careful about the heat. Sometime ask Desertgirl what she witnessed in Grand Canyon with a baby in a backpack...
