Reavis Ranch 2.0 - No Gimpy Hippies

Post by Hippy »

So, I've decided to revisit Reavis again this year...mainly to tackle Mound Mtn which we were unable to get to last year due to some wild weather! (And possibly due to a "minor" foot injury...)
But also because there were so many of you who weren't able to join us last time and requested a do-over! :)

So here's your chance!
Mark it on your calendars, pack your bag and lace up your boots!

EDIT: changed to first weekend in November!

November 1-3, 2013 (fri, sat, sun)

There will be a visit to Circle stone, Mound Mtn and I'm sure we can come up with some more fun :)

I plan to hike in from the South and am hoping to take over a good chunk of the meadow from that end.

For those of you who haven't experienced this event before, this IS a backpacking trip, you are all responsible for packing in and out your own gear and food etc, there was a reliable water source to filter from last year and I'm pretty sure its permanent, year round so bring your water filter.

It is bear country but we didn't have any problems before.
Depending on which trail you come in from you can expect up to a 9 mile hike in. Check trail descriptions for more info :)

And...if we're lucky, maybe we can once more dine on the best apples known to mankind!! Sooo delicious!

Any questions?

one of these days, i'll have to turn you guys on to the "other" apple orchard. some of us know where it is.. a nice pasture, lots of trees, a nearby creek, and apples.
easy short hike, and hidden in the middle of a wide mountain.

there is also a cool waterfall at the start of the hike, but getting there can be some work, man.

Sounds similar to where I was yesterday. Ok so we saw no waterfall and there were 5 only apple trees, but at least the pasture, nearby creek and 'wide mountain' were part of the deal.

I got a ride with a buddy of mine that has not walked this trail either. @Hippy, Can we meet up on the East side and follow you to the trailhead and up to the camp site? Since it's our first time I don't want to get lost!

ok. I think my plan is: I will drive up to the north TH arriving around 9am on SATURDAY. If anyone needs a ride, let me know and I would be happy to pick you up.
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

Well I am stuck working Saturday morning and if I am able to get off early enough I'm going to join a couple friends on a trip up Weavers needle . It has been taunting me ever since my failed attempt last year.

I will only be doing a day hike from Roger's Trough on Friday and have room for at least one more rider, possibly two.

If you plan on staying through the weekend AND have a ride out on Sunday
<or>
If you are interested in a day-hike Friday only, send me a PM.

I'll be leaving East Mesa (Near Higley & Brown) 6 am sharp with an approximate ETA of 8 am at Rogers Trough.

We were just there last weekend from the South...and probably met Kevin and didn't know it!! We found a few apples on the ground that we were able to bring home! To top off the wonderful trip...we ended up with a flat tire out there. Try changing that on the 'flat' road. Hubby was awesome! We have been out there 3 times--the first time was in the old truck and when we needed to replace it, we required a vehicle that would get us down this road. Ironic that the road we bought the vehicle for gave us a flat tire :) We still love the Reavis Ranch backpack trip.

Hah! that reminds me of a flat a while ago... my second or third trip there, April 1988, we got a flat above the tight corner and were blocking the road. Back then 172 was a really rough road - similar to 4 peaks road from the west side. While we were fumbling with the crappy scissor jack, two guys in a jeep couldn't get by so they lent us their hydraulic jack. Bam! we were done in about 5 minutes. I swore I would get one of those jacks but 25 years later I still haven't got round to it

Only a few days left and you'll all be proud to know that the five day time frame I had to break myself has passed...NO GIMPY HIPPIES! :y:

I'll be leaving the GC tomorrow after work and will hit Phoenix around 8pm in time for some beer and cookies!

We stopped to see if you needed any help. Also went on a walk about getting out of the ranch. :D Also smoked us on the trail coming out. I was the one with my nephew. He wasn't really feeling the hike out. (Neither was I)

I was gonna say that we were in the Green FJ with the Hike AZ sticker on it. We appreciated you stopping to ask...we were able to find a flat rock to use under the jack...and then had the nervous drive out hoping we didn't blow another one! Good for your nephew getting out enjoying nature--I didn't get introduced to Hiking and Backpacking until I met Jason in my 30's...we just got back from doing the John Muir Trail for my 40th bday--nothing like never sleeping in a tent 10 years ago to doing 19 days! Best trip ever!

More likely temps up there this weekend are:

Friday High 67
Saturday Low 48 High 70
Sunday Low 49 High 64

Knowing how cold air can pool up in low spots & valleys, I would expect morning lows to be a bit colder than the spot forecast shows.

Still pretty mild compared to what it could be! :)
