I was expecting a few bucks, but was pleasantly surprised to see I had built up a $100 dividend! DADDY GOT NEW BOOTS! $125, deduct the 20% for one single item...made them $100, applied my dividend and viola...FREE BOOTS!

@Alston Neal
Me neither. I've never been inside an REI store, but I did look in the front window of one once in Santa Fe.

I have not read all the recent comments for this years go around, so this issue I have has probably been discussed,
but-
I received my 2013 dividend $$ amount on 3/24 with the additional 20% off one full priced item and I immediately went on line to REI to buy a new set of
Black Diamond's newest top of the line trekking poles, the Alpine Carbon.. I got to their on line check out with no home shipping charges applicable (yea!!) and then learned that the 20% discount is not in effect until Fri-3/28
to 4/13
and I also bet free home shipping charges go away on 3/28.
Also, I wonder how many of us receive the refund one day along with the additional 20% discount, and the next day make the wasted drive to REI with intentions of taking advantage of the refund + discount on same day to only learn we will need to make another later trip for the 20% discount

It's called Marketing/Sales strategy..

Hank, I've gone in a day or so before my 20% coupon was active and REI gave me the discount regardless. They were cool about it. They just said to check the dates in the future. I'm sure it depends on who the employee is.

Well, fortunately I made a wrong assumption as REI "free home Shipping & Handling Charges did not go away on 3/28"

An economist might tell you that the REI dividend is proof of the high markup it puts on its items, and that it makes so much money off of every transaction that it can afford to give a dividend credit. Additionally, if the markup is so high then it doesn't lose that much by giving you a store credit in the form of a dividend. However, I think it's freaking cool. Getting ready to buy something that I might need.

Jim I agree with you 100% I know I over-pay...but its like taxes I loan the money to Uncle Sam and then ask for a little back at the end of the year ;)
I am both very pleased and ashamed to announce that I enjoyed my 177.00 dividend check and 100 gift card arriving on the same day...100 gift card for applying for the credit card of course ;) gotta love that cyclical debt

but hey there are worse vices in this world to spend money on then REI...

NRS (Northwest River Supply) has a similar deal called "Boaters' Bucks." I got about the same back from NRS that I got from REI, around 20 bucks. Replaced my lost bicycle pump with my REI dividend. With my Boaters' Bucks I bought 5 Wag Bags.......

Lower than average dividend this year - most REI purchases waited until sales or discount codes. Snuck in today to take advantage of the end of the 20% window (which I've been enjoying seeing mirrored by places like backcountry.com too...). Still, not going to complain about a dividend to help out with some stove repairs and the 20% coupon towards my first ever harness for canyoneering exploits down here!

I was shocked that this year I got ~$45 back. Only thing I recall buying was a grill for car camping. Great timkng though since I blew out the stitching on my Lowa's just a couple weeks ago. Here's to hoping the Renegade GTX mids are worth it.

My question is I am looking for the best hiking books for the Cave Creek areas. As I recently moved to Deer Valley. I am looking for hikes in my area to plan when I can hike again.
Thanks for any help.

This is not a guidebook, it is a self-published book, 1991. But it was written by a British guy named Geoffrey Platts who liked to hike Cave Creek, other creeks and along the Verde in Central Arizona in summer when there were few people around. Of course, back then there were fewer hikers, period. He lived in Cave Creek. In the book he describes a lot of places without naming very many of them. For those of you who know the creek hikes, it might be entertaining reading. You can buy it for a penny plus shipping:

Well I used mine today and got a few maps and a hiking book for Flagstaff. The maps I got are Green Tails Maps. Cave Creek and the McDowell Mountain's.
I need new boots, but decided to wait until I can walk again.
