It's not so much a ski area as a snowy cliff.
:D

I did the lower half of Black Mesa and could see the San Juans. Both the highest peaks of the Wilson Group, others?, and the La Platas all had snow on them. Very pretty hiking down while the snow turned pink, as seen from over 100 miles away. The Abajos had a little snow on them, too. I wonder if the snow looked prettier as it was seen with a setting sun and through pollution from the coal plants in Ship Rock?

I agree! Love Silverton.

Xs 2 on Silverton, my wife and I love it, especially after camping a week or so and then going in and pigging out.
My family was from Creede/Wagon Wheel Gap. As a kid I got to spend part of my summer there. A truly great time... :)

I always liked swamp coolers for that reason, you can leave the screen door open, etc. Sure, they don't work well during monsoon, but they do save on electric bill if you have one as a backup. In Tucson that's all we had, though, and it was usually fine. I don't like a really cold house, anyway.

Got burnt on my backpack yesterday, and sitting out in the sun all day today hasn't helped any. Called it early to head in to the campsite and get ready for tomorrow. Warm here in St. George.

Yes, well, this is also the best time of year to hike in Payson, the White Mtns., Flagstaff, Prescott, etc. Dry, warm, fall weather. Absolutely great up here in Flag! I don't have time to hike, however. Sigh... Another 10 days I will be done with some of this work, so can hopefully get back to hiking daily.

I have no idea. I have been too busy with homework since my Grand Canyon trip. I will be going up 89 today, though, and will be able to have plenty of glimpses up the sides of the mountain. So, I will try to get back with you as to what i can see from 89.

The road to Lockett Meadow apparently has reopened in the last couple of days.

Yeah I read that but we'll be taking our dog and isn't that closed to dogs?

Is that a new thing? I've taken my dog on hikes in Lockett Meadow and the Inner Basin before!

I found a photo of the sign that says keep dogs on leash, so... http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=29097
And Kai having a blast! http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=11940

Inner Basin is totally open to dogs...it's not on park service land or anything.

A little research: CNF has a forest order limiting the use of domestic livestock (AKA horses) in Lockett Meadow and the Inner Basin. It was enacted in 1991. Some references on the website also say "pets" are prohibited, but the actual order does not.

The web page for the Inner Basin Trail also says
The inner basin is closed to dogs and livestock above the watershed cabin.
but that is also NOT reflected in the forest order.
The web page for Lockett Meadow Campground says that pets must be restrained or on a leash.

So you are at least permitted to have your dog up to the watershed cabin, and I would say it is a gray area at best as to whether it is officially prohibited above the cabin.

Thanks folks for kinda clearing that up.
I knew somewhere back in the deep recesses of my brain that it was closed because of it being a water source.
But with my luck I'd be the first to be arrested and charged.

I would see dogs up there a lot. I think you can bring them and just pick up after them.
