Mt. Wrightson Overnighter...

Moving this discussion from a thread under my photo to an actual discussion where it belongs...

A request was made for a trip up Mt. Wrightson with an overnight at Josephine Saddle. I was thinking we could do this as the Old Baldy Super Trail Loop for variety... So I need input on a good time. With this mild winter it's easy to get lulled into thinking it'll always be warm, but snowstorms have been known to hit up there as late as March, and I've hiked it in early April and needed my Yacktrax for the ice on the north-facing slopes. But, what the heck, I'm up for anything.

Looks like I could do the first weekend in April, the first weekend in May, the weekend of May 23, or anytime after June 20. Sick, I know. I'm way overbooked. What you fellas think?

Since we'll drop packs at Josephine, it's another perfect lux hike - less than 3 miles to camp... Then we can hike down and get some killer pizza or real Sonoran style Mexican food (not that gringo stuff you get up in Phoenix!)

I believe the word I used was "Gringo" Mexican food. Although there's plenty of shoddy stuff up there, too. Most of you wouldn't know a Chalupa if it bit you on the kister.

I'll come up with some spanky little rededvouz point soon... :D

ok, guess you've never heard of Rito's, Oaxaca, Carolina's, Via DeLosantos, or El Bravo. Those are just some of the good ones in PHX. There are a bunch more in outer cities like Glendale and Scottsdale.
Barrio Cafe is one place I would send you. Or anyone from outside AZ for that matter... beleive me, even if there are better places for Mex food it certainly isnt Iowa or Ohio. :o

just to be a stickler: the burrito was invented by a housewife in the United States. So no, they are not authentic mexican. also, fortune cookies were invented by a white guy in san francisco - and american flags are made in china. (just like those cheap "support our troops" stickers) :o

Man, the squirrel gets all hyper when you dis las concinas... And I love Carolinas and Oaxaca- I just gotta toot my town, you know. We ain't got big water parks or Scottsdale, so we gotta brag on what we do got ;)

Did you know the Chimichanga was reportedly invented in Tucson at El Charro Cafe? Of course, it's one of 4 or 5 places fighting for the distinction, but who's counting? AND chow-mein was invented for American Railway workers... ha - see, I know random food facts too. :D

Wanted to check back in and see where folks were for this. I still have a few ABCers who are interested in going. It should be a great weekend for a hike up on the 'Ritas...

If it's April 4-5, I'm in. I have a little grill top I can bring; if someone has a bigger one that would be better. If I recall there is good hardwood for cooking to be had at Josephine. It would be cool to carpool with anyone coming from Phx.

Oops, I guess I'm not in; should checked with the Chief of Staff first.

Looks like the group shrank, but I think it's still a great weekend to hit a peak.

Gonna meet at the Fry's parking lot at Irvington and I-19 at 7am on Saturday morning - or at least that's the plan so far. Let me know if that's a problem and I'll adjust it.

I hear crickets chirping in the distance, and a cool wind passing through the trees... Will I be all alone on the mountain this weekend??

Chirp chirp. Chirp Chirp...

I have a meeting Friday night and am still tenuous about my leg. I really wanted to get down there, too!! :wrt:
As a penance I am willing to organize another over-nighter later in the year so we can all try again? I might even be able to kidnap Nick with Preston's help :sl:

Okay - so when are we going to schedule the replacement for this awsome trip - since y'all made me go solo? June 20-21 could be a great time for a trip... We could hike/camp up in Wilderness of Rocks, try for Mt. Wrightson again, or maybe even head into Mt. Graham area... Somewhere high enough to get us out of the heat which (I'm sure) will be killer by then!

Wilderness could be warm.

I don't know about you all, but I plan to hit the Chiricahuas first chance I get...

About the lowest you'd get would be about 7k I think. Should still be comfortable, last time I camped there it was still a bit chilly :D

Yeah, might not be too bad...it just depends. But June? Hmmm.

I was just up there and hiked from the Mt. Lemmon trailhead down into Canada del Oro. The hike down wasn't bad, but the hike out was a sweat-fest.
