I keep checking the gauge for the LCR at Winslow hoping to see a surge, but no dice. Really hoping for a reason to go out and see Grand Falls again.

Expect mosquitoes!!!
I had quite a few of them on me in Flagstaff, something I don't remember much of when I lived there. It was super green, with the now over 8 inches of rain they have had this summer so far.
A super green mosquito?

:D

Iridescent green mosquitoes. The hill sides and grassy areas were green, too.

I used to do that until I found out it will take a very long time for the surge to reach Winslow, and another week for it to reach Cameron. Just hang on. If it's gonna show up it will show up.

Edit: Jake, looking at the data page makes me think they are holding water back at Lyman Lake.

We're not talking about spring snow melt here. Jake doesn't care about a trickle of water over Grand Falls. He wants to see a flash flood, and that happens after local rainfall.

For the record, the Winslow stream gauge is about 65 river miles from Grand Falls and another 50 miles to the Cameron gauge. A summer monsoon flash flood will travel those 115 miles in 1-2 days, if not influenced by other local rains. That's an average of only 3-5mph. If the ground is already saturated, it will go even faster. That is what is required for Grand Falls to run. Saturated soil (sand!) between Winslow and the falls. And lots of rain in a short period of time.

If it actually took a week to do the last 50 miles, that would be about 0.3mph. I don't think most people would call that much of a "surge" or "flow".

We had 1.25 inches of rain in the gauge when we got home! So had the second highest amount this monsoon season.. makes about 3 inches at our house...

I've not seen even .1" in the rain gauge at my house all summer. A few times .05" or so. It's been very dry in my specific location, though there has been ample rain nearby.

what is your yearly summer average?

@fricknaley
I haven't updated my averages in quite some time (something to do), but at my house from 1981-2002 (22 years) I averaged 0.20 in June, 2.66 in July, 2.94 in August, and 1.34 in September. NWS normals (1981-2010) at airport are: 0.20 in June, 2.25 in July, 2.39 in August, and 1.29 in September.

This yields an average 4 month total of 7.14 at my house and 6.13 at the NWS. Annual averages are 13.42 at my house and 11.59 at the NWS. The average total precipitation for those four months represents 53 percent of the annual total at both sites. So yeah, the summer rains are a big deal.

I see what you're saying. Maybe it just SEEMS to take forever to get from one gauge to the next.

I was across the bridge at Cameron on Sunday, not a lot of water, but we've had a bunch more rain since then.

Rain gauge at my home in Payson was 1.5" for yesterdays storm. Finally have a rain gauge that elk, javelin, ravens and mountain jays are not interested in tearing up.

NWS Phoenix has a nice recap on yesterday's extreme weather. If you're into that kind of thing.
