Superstitions Backpack 3/8-3/9

Post by Hoffmaster »

Proposed Route: Drive to Tortilla Ranch (4WD wanted!) and start on the JF Trail (106). Then split off onto the Hoolie Bacon Trail (111). Connect with the Red Tanks Trail (107). Head south towards Dripping Spring and probably camp there. Next we will head east to the JF Trail. I would like to hike up Randolph Canyon instead of following the Coffee Flat Trail. We will climb to Tortilla Pass, then stay on the JF Trail and follow it downhill all the way to Tortilla Ranch. Estimated roundtrip mileage is a very manageable 20.5 miles or 33 kilometers :D .
Optional side trips include: Horse Camp Corral, and the Lost Dutchman Jr. Mine.

Sweet Shawn! It'll be good to meet you finally!

Well...probably not late, but at least Sunday evening. It is hard to know for sure exactly what time we will finish. I hesitate to guess because I'm never even close. BTW, I sent you a PM.

So, I've cleared the decks at work, but the political reality within my family is that the ten-year-old boy will be coming with me wherever I end up going.
Ben's a good backpacker - for being 10 - but I'd really rather not impose such a scenario on a group of adults that I don't already know. It dramatically reduces the margin for error if an emergency comes up.
So we're going to do an easier trail (the Cottonwood/cave creek loop up by 7 Springs).

Thanx anyway.

Yeah, I was counting your Jeep. Even if we don't need it, you're going to want to drive the road anyway. It looks like a lot of fun.

The trip was a huge success with a 100% survival rating! Thanks for coming out everyone. Liz wasn't sure if she'd like this trip, but she said it was a lot of fun and very challenging. She has no regrets. I hope you all can say the same!
I was looking at the Supes Hiker's Guide and I don't have much left to do. A few trails on the east side. I've already schemed a few off-trail trips for next time. I think this will be my last Supes trip until next fall or winter. By the time I have a free weekend again, it'll be blazing hot out there. Soon it will be time to explore a new area!

Someone asked about the "spot" weather forecast site. If you Google "forecast weather gov mapclick" you'll fine it.

I am pleased that all went well on your expedition.
As for me, I woke up Sunday morning with chest congestion and a developing fever, which is a problem when you've hiked 13 miles from your car and your partner is ten years old. Happily, we were only a couple of miles from an established campground, where I was able to recruit some nice people to drive us back into cel phone range.
Ben was an extraordinary sport about it all, but it is just as well that y'all didn't have to suffer through that with me.
