Howdy HAZers...
I have a permit (8) and am planning an over-nighter out at Cape Solitude (eastern Grand Canyon Rim) on
SATURDAY - 10/6.
Committed hikers should plan on 15-16 miles ONE WAY ((
w/no water & dry camping)-however; the more peeps we get, the more caching we can do!!

)
Should be some tremendous sunset/sunrise canyon viewings of confluence area and Chuar Valley.
Friday night will camp at "Desert View Campground" for a reasonably early start on Saturday.

Hope that works out for everyone!! can't wait, one week left! John, Frank & Vin, if Vin's schedule opens up friday we might be able to leave earlier than planned, I know Frank is taking a half day (yes?) and John didn't you say you were also? And I'll have the day off...so if Vin had it off we can leave crazy earlier than planned...crossy the fingers!

I plan on working a full day on Friday and can be done between 3:30 and 4pm. I will be ready immediately afterwards and can pick up the crew at Vince's and then we're off for the canyon. The drive to Vince's will take me 15 minutes. I might be able to leave a few minutes earlier...3pm would be the absolute earliest I can leave work.
Concerning water, I plan on starting the hike with 10 liters. I would rather have too much then too little. My plan will be to cache 1 liter at mile 4 and then another 2 liters at mile 8. I plan on drinking 3 liters on the hike out to the Cape and that leaves me with 4 liters for camp and the following morning.

John, that's a LOT of water now I feel like I'll be under-hydrated
I guess I'll grab one more bladder of some sort just in case!

If you weigh half of what John weighs, do you also need half as much water?

If this were the case Hippy will not need any water. She can survive on her own saliva.

When this happens I will just grab my bike and ride off into the sunset. Into the Wild style.

Out of curiosity is there any chance of rain? I looked at the forecast and historic weather but don't see it likely. I aim to skip out on bringing a tarp if so....

The canyon has a nasty way of biting those who think they've figured out her moods... I always think that the tarp is a good idea at the GC, no matter what the weather reports say. But then, I've been bitten a time or two, so I'm a bit wary...

I guess I am just splitting hairs, the whole setup only weighs just over a pound including the stakes. I'll just sneak it into the Hippy's bag.

Hello everyone....
It sounds like we are set...
John is bringing 4 (hippy, vince, himself and volcano)
Wendy is bringing "fan" from Phx and picking me up in Flagstaff around 4pm...we'll have 2 4x4's (well really just Wendy's since I doubt John know how to use his

)
Our group will arrive first...I'll do my best to get us 2 campsites close to each other at Desert View.
I'm not going to say how much water I'm bringing...but I plan on carrying the most I can...(Hippy won't be able to survive on spit alone)
I would suggest that those who are able and willing, cache some water every third of the way...a least a liter or so....
Like I've mentioned, I've done the first 3-4 miles out there...the hiking terrain is generally easy with rolling hills, at times steep, but short - - very rocky!!....weather looks to be good!! The worst part of the journey I'm sure will be the steep drive down to the trail-head...
I would suggest grabbing a sammie in Flagstaff for dinner, I think we can have a campfire, and I'll probably be bringing some of my firewood....not sure if anyone will wanna roast wienies, but I'll be glad to partake if they are brought....
For those that don't know, Desert View is "fully featured" with expensive gas station and market just a short drive (walk) away from campground....
John/Hippie I have your cell numbers....Wendy can you PM me yours....

i take donations? :yuck: oh and Larry my phone won't work up there but I'll have it with me so we can send you a text from Vince or John's no problem. I would to partake in your roasted weinies if they happen to be rabbit roughage in disguise aaaand the market is extremely expensive also! the apples alone wil lbreak the bank!!!!!!!! see you all tonight!
