2022 Fire Season

Well, here we go...

A fire out past Doney Park, northeast of Flagstaff, is fairly close to where I spend my summers. I was going to move my car there tomorrow. But I guess I won't be moving it there just yet. I'll park it somewhere else.

And... a friend and I were going to start a little bicycle tour over by Prescott, on Thursday. But part of our route is under a closure, due to the Crooks fire.

Not unexpected but still a bit earlier than I thought we'd be seeing it. :(

Watched the winds whip it up yesterday driving by on the 17. Scary to see. Such a beautiful part of the Bradshaw’s.

Could you not make any plans for the eastern part of the state please.

A couple folks I know from GRCA just got deployed to the Tunnel Fire. :(
It's gonna be a scary ugly year.
One bit of hope - my top-secret, highly accurate weather guy says it's going to be another record-type monsoon this year, and will start early.

@chumley Oh maaaaaaaan. Facebook people are damn idiots with that guy, quoting him all the time and sending him money. Simple google search will show his, uh, colorful history. Humans are so dumb

I wish I could send some of our excess rain your way. I wondered whether to expect a bad fire season when I saw the dust storm up on the plateau a couple weeks ago.

One can hope, yeah? Believe it or not, I have a stubborn optimistic streak!
I am really hoping for rainfall equal to or better than last monsoon, though ... for all the obvious reasons - plus I had so much fun hunting for mushrooms last year that I'd like to do it again ... kinda makes up for lack of wildflowers.

Two fires SE of Taos near Sante Fe, but with winds coming from west and SW all Last night pretty sure the smoke obscuring the mountains and making it IFR in the valley toward Sante Fe is from Az. Fires.

The radio news this morning said that 700 homes in the Flagstaff area were being evacuated. I hope it doesn't get any worse.

I heard through the grapevine this morning that the visitor center and housing at Sunset Crater have burned. Let's see if my grapevine is correct... It's not on the news yet.

As of 4:45 this morning Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument posted that all staff were accounted for and safe and all culturally important items from the visitor center have been removed. As of the time of their post, the visitor center remained unharmed. Although, they wrote that the rest of the monument had burned in its entirety.

Well, I'm glad my "source" was mistaken. Thanks for the update. I kind of wanted to test the grapevine. Apparently it's not too reliable.

Thanks to an explosion of communication outlets over the past years, we now have so many more sources of misinformation than ever before!

Ain't it great? In this case it was just one person passing it along to another person. The first person in question I believe to be some sort of Park Service employee, however not from that Park. Kind of like a game of telephone.
