I have never seen this tip before.
A towel and a piece of aluminum foil might not seem like life-saving equipment, but in a hiking emergency, they could be.
Before you go hiking, taking a few extra precautions could make all the difference. Here are some tips to make sure you return safely from your adventures.

Am I the only that likes to figure out the make of the boot print?

Probably not. My wife and I once briefly wore the same boot model. A guy caught up to us one afternoon and proclaimed his excitement at finding the four-legged hiker.

I've been seeing a lot of carpet booties on my hikes near the border. Don't think they are a fan.

Doesn't everyone wear Altra Lone Peaks, making this moot?

During prohibition bootleggers would wear these so as to not leave footprints. This gave new meaning to the phrase "hoofing it".

Illegal immigrants wear carpet covering over their shoes so it doesn’t leave a shoe print. I have found quite a few in the desert down including backpacks and other thrash but no money!

I think tracking is kind of fun if you have the time. I've done it on a couple of trips, backtracking my own route to see if I could stay on it and agreed with my inbound thinking. My ex and I once did it to a couple of border patrol guys who were tracking us near the border; we came up behind them but revealed ourselves pretty far out as they did have weapons. No need to make anyone too nervous. We saw them, then purposely disguised our track, circled behind a small hill and popped out while they were stopped and trying to ascertain where we had gone.
If I am in a remote area near the border I do pay attention to track in the area, if it's fresh, to minimize surprise encounters. One time looked down and saw a half eaten apple, not even browned yet.
