Hi. I'm out of Tucson and interested in doing some hiking in the Cabeza Prieta Refuge. Looking for somewhere remote that I can get to with AWD (Forester). Idea is to find somewhere to car camp and then either walk out of camp or drive to hike nearby. A mixture of valley/mountain/canyon would be ideal.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Camping in CPR is at-large and largely unrestricted once you have your permit. There are a few 'campgrounds', but they are rudimentary (or less). You can expand your exploration area by visiting the Goldwater Range sections. Lots of room to roam and solitude. https://luke.isportsman.net/

Wow. From the pictures, that looks like a killer outing. Thank you for sending me that. It's definitely going on my list for this later winter/spring. Since I only have three days this time, I'm going to stay closer to Tucson/Ajo. I think I'm thinking of heading out Charlie Bell and going up into Child's on day 1 and then into the Growler range on day 2, if I can make it that far during a day hike.

Again, thanks for suggesting that. It looks like something I would really enjoy and benefit from.

On the permit site it states:
Each individual must get a new permit each year on or after 1 July.
Seems pretty clear and opaque at the same time...
That statement appears to be geared toward folks who have had or get new permits every year.

So... personally not having a clue here, for folks have never had a permit before, does that mean one cannot apply for a permit from Jan 1 to June 30?

@CannondaleKid It means that your permit is valid for up to one year, but regardless of when you get yours, it will expire the next occurrence of June 30.
If you get it on July 1, your permit will be valid for a full year. If you get it on June 29, it will be valid for just one day.

This information is more clearly explained in the training videos and quizzes that you must complete in order to get your permit.
