The 8-hour rescue over Fourth of July weekend at Torreys Peak involved a rescuer shimmying down a steep mountainside to where Zola, the 3-year-old dog, had fallen.

Yikes! That's a tough spot. A lot of people bring dogs to Grays and Torreys, I think because the normal routes aren't terribly difficult under summer conditions, but it still must be a tough day for some of them.

Hopefully the owner had a COSAR card or hunting/fishing license so the responders get reimbursed.

a seven member team from the all-volunteer rescue group based in Jefferson County spent the next eight hours of their Fourth of July weekend locating and then rescuing the dog.
Not sure how volunteering works where you live?

@chumley
The COSAR card fees cover responders for costs. Including sheriff’s, fire, paramedics. SARA in Tucson is a volunteer group, yet they do have costs associated with search and rescue. I have donated to them in the past.
That’s how it works where I am from.

I’m glad to hear there’s a mechanism in place to cover the costs that the sheriff, fire, and paramedics incur while performing their official duties.

It’s a burden for those rural counties with limited resources.

I understand how it works. It’s a worthy cause to contribute to even if the state takes 33% for administering the program before disbursing to local rescuers.

But the point is that the rescue agencies involved will get assistance from the program regardless of whether the individual (or dog?) being rescued has a card or not.

@33% for a government cut is cheap. No such thing as free money.
