It would be nice to have the option of carrying something like that, assuming the price is reasonable and the shelf life is long enough.

Thousands? Seriously? C'mon! Well, I looked it up. It's true, worldwide. In the US, although 7,000 to 8,000 are bitten, according to the CDC, only about 5 die. However, worldwide, it's another matter. WHO estimates about 81,000 to 137,000 die per year, worldwide. The saw-scaled viper is said to cause the most deaths by any one type. It inhabits both Asia and Africa.
