Matthew Lewin, expedition physician for the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, hopes to develop a pill that would thwart the effects of a venomous snakebite in remote areas

It would be nice to have the option of carrying something like that, assuming the price is reasonable and the shelf life is long enough.

Thousands? Seriously? C'mon! Well, I looked it up. It's true, worldwide. In the US, although 7,000 to 8,000 are bitten, according to the CDC, only about 5 die. However, worldwide, it's another matter. WHO estimates about 81,000 to 137,000 die per year, worldwide. The saw-scaled viper is said to cause the most deaths by any one type. It inhabits both Asia and Africa.
