The more I hike in the Superstitions, the more I am in awe of this amazing wilderness. Lately I have been somewhat obsessed with learning as much as I can (yeah and now with summer comin' I'll be limited, as the best learning is of course to get out in it- gonna have to be mornings), and I have been reading as much as I can about Supes history.

Can anyone recommend some more recent books about Waltz, Reavis, Ruth, the Petrasches, the Piper-Jones fiasco, Morrow (this guy is super interesting) as well as any more contemporary history of the Sups, not directly related to the LDM?

I have read Superstition Mountain, A Ride Through Time by Swanson and Kollenborn, and am reading Tales of the Superstitions by Robert Blair now. Looking for maybe something written a little more recently.

For general Arizona history check out Marshall Trimble's 1977 Arizona - A Panoramic History of a Frontier State

It's hard to find a decent Supes book that doesn't revolve primarily around the Lost Dutchman legend. I recommend The Bible on the Lost Dutchman Gold Mine and Jacob Waltz by Helen Corbin. It was printed in 2002. It is a very fascinating book, giving you more info than you ever wanted to know. Also, The Sterling Legend by Estee Conaster, a great book as well, is older, printed originally in 1972.
I know where you're coming from though; when I started hiking the Supes 3 1/2 years ago, I couldn't learn enough about them. Have fun!

Hkers Guide to the Superstition Mountains by Jack Carlson and Elizabeth Stewart is another source of the history of the area.
