Supes History

The more I hike in the Superstitions, the more I am in awe of this amazing wilderness. Lately I have been somewhat obsessed with learning as much as I can (yeah and now with summer comin' I'll be limited, as the best learning is of course to get out in it- gonna have to be mornings), and I have been reading as much as I can about Supes history.

Can anyone recommend some more recent books about Waltz, Reavis, Ruth, the Petrasches, the Piper-Jones fiasco, Morrow (this guy is super interesting) as well as any more contemporary history of the Sups, not directly related to the LDM?

I have read Superstition Mountain, A Ride Through Time by Swanson and Kollenborn, and am reading Tales of the Superstitions by Robert Blair now. Looking for maybe something written a little more recently.

Thanks!
Mike

Superstition Mountain is interesting on characters and such.
Glover's - The Lost Dutchman Mine of Jacob Waltz is fair if you're looking for recent.

some of the authors/hunters hang out at

Piper-Jones is best told by Robert Sikorsky in Quest for the Dutchman's Gold

1953 Sims Ely - The Lost Dutchman Mine will turn you into a speed reader

For general Arizona history check out Marshall Trimble's 1977 Arizona - A Panoramic History of a Frontier State

It's hard to find a decent Supes book that doesn't revolve primarily around the Lost Dutchman legend. I recommend The Bible on the Lost Dutchman Gold Mine and Jacob Waltz by Helen Corbin. It was printed in 2002. It is a very fascinating book, giving you more info than you ever wanted to know. Also, The Sterling Legend by Estee Conaster, a great book as well, is older, printed originally in 1972.
I know where you're coming from though; when I started hiking the Supes 3 1/2 years ago, I couldn't learn enough about them. Have fun!

Hkers Guide to the Superstition Mountains by Jack Carlson and Elizabeth Stewart is another source of the history of the area.

In response to Nighthiker's reply:

Thanks Nighthiker-

Yeah the Hiker's Guide is what got me started.

Appreciate all your input. I will certainly check out all your recommendations!

Drop by the museum out there and pick up a handful of the back issues of their journals, as well as a few of the books.

Thanks Sredfield. I actually did stop by there after my hike to Massacre Falls on Saturday morning. Had a nice visit.
