Camp Reno

The area were Camp Reno is located was destroyed by the Edge Complex fire. The area was a military post in the late 1860's and is located several miles west of Punkin Center. The area had a large grove of oak and walnut trees. The parade ground area of the former post was clear of rocks, mostly level and was the main area of the oak grove. Sycamore and cottonwoods were also located around the spring.

I know that's one of your favorite areas cause you've mentioned it many times throughout the years. The coverage of that fire is sad. Wish I had takin the time to check it out more.
Interesting history for others. Established in 1868, as a sub-station of Fort McDowell, in what was then called Green Valley. Within two months five companies stationed at the camp in an effort to hold the Apaches to Tonto Valley. The camp was only occupied for about two years. Located on a mesa it was a raiding opportunity for the Indians. Especially since the canyons alongside provided water and brush coverage.
It doesn't appear to be much of mesa looking at topo. Guess I still have reason to check it out someday.
