Why is it called Roger's Trough? Who was Roger? I wonder about these names and who where these people. I'm always interested in the history of the sites and trails.

Years ago there used to be a mining millsite north of the Rogers trailhead. It was located on a hill east of the current trail. Rogers was the name of the principle owner. Pretty much all of it has been removed by now but its worth a few minutes to hike up and look at the site.

The Superstitions is full of Indian, mining and ranching ruins. If you only hike the trails you will miss most all of it. When you can, hike parallel to the trail you are on. The further out you can be from the trail the more likely you will find those interesting remains of years gone by.

I know of a mine tunnel I found that way that still has the old Atlas dynamite boxes at the far end of the tunnel. While hiking on the top of Black Top Mesa I once kicked up from the tall grass a dynamite tamper. It is now in the Superstition Mtn. Museum but I don't think it is currently on display.

Just be careful when you go cross country and don't hike alone. In 1981 I found human bones washing down Trap Canyon. He had been missing for a year and a half before he was discovered. I backpacked through six months later and only found the bones that the recovery team had missed.
