Planning a trip tp Fossil Springs and wouldn't you know it they closed the forest. The trailhead is in the tonto, the trail itself they say is in the coconino. Should I risk it ?

I wouldn't. People who don't respect the rules make it harder for the next guy. Besides, there will likely be a closed sign at the trailhead.

Fossil Springs is also one of the most popular backpacking sites in Arizona. With budget cuts its doubtful that they'll have rangers out looking for people violating the closure - but if they do, Fossil Springs is one of first places they'll look.

Fossil Creek is the boundary between the Coconino and the Tonto National Forests. If you access from the South (Tonto National Forest) it is still open.

Portions of the Tonto National Forest are now closed, no access to Fossil Springs and the Pinal Mtn. Rec. Area is also closed.
