I'll start: He's guilty.
Your turn: What should his punishment be?
Arizona man cited in petroglyph vandalism

Mar. 24, 2010 07:49 AM
Associated Press

LAUGHLIN, Nev. - A 20-year-old Bullhead City, Ariz., man is suspected of vandalizing petroglyphs at Grapevine Canyon in Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Federal officials said the man was cited for defacing/disturbing an archaeological resource, using and discharging a weapon, littering and vandalism.

Park rangers were tipped off March 19 that kids were firing paintballs in the area.

Rangers responded and contacted the man at the Grapevine Canyon trailhead parking lot. A preliminary investigation lead them to suspect that he was responsible.

At least four petroglyph panels and numerous rock faces were defaced with paint.

The man was cited and released but will be required to appear before a federal magistrate.
PS I was thinking of just adding this to the State Parks thread because it made me think of Homolovi, but I'd rather discuss exactly what is appropriate to do to people like this?

First thing first - he should now become a prohibited possessor. He has already shown a capacity to be irresponsible with weapons, he definitely does not need to continue to enjoy his right to bear arms; at least not for a few decades... :?

I def think a big fine is in order...also some kind of community service and education.

He's guilty....reminds me when I was interviewed to be on a jury. Q...I was asked if I took the word of a police officer over the word of the defendant. My answer...of course. Q...Can you look beyond that....A..No. to which I added there's video of this guy stealing from an ATM...he's guilty. What if the evidence was throw out? I'd still know he was guilty. your excused but not until the judge warned me.

I'm gonna suggest a suspended license. 1-year should do it. I don't think fines really affect too many people. (Either they can afford the fine and they pay it, or they can't afford it and they don't!) But a 20-year old who's not allowed to drive for a year? Could make him think twice about the consequences of his actions in the future.

In response to chumley:
Good point...but if they can't pay a fine.... then they're probably not gonna worry about driving with a suspended license.

Make him clean pit toilets for the forest service for a year.

Another thing that might be helpful would be to make him sit down in front a of a group of representatives from the local American Indian tribes and explain to them, face-to-face, why he found it necessary to desecrate part of their heritage. I also like the idea of making idiots like this into messengers; make him create and present a talk about why what he did was wrong.

+1 to Jeff and Alex.

If only the Arizona Archaeology Irregulars had been on the job there.
Stuff like that just sickens me. Sounds like he's guilty to me.

My thoughts:

1 toothbrush
1 paint scraper
1 bucket of water with a hint of vinegar
1 man guilty of defacing an archaeological resource

Lots and lots of dirt, gum and graffiti on benches, walls, toilets and curbs in the Lake Mead Recreation area. Especially now that spring break is over.

Any questions? :sl:
