Looking for partners and suggestions for a hike in Western Arizona, where there are a sad lack of Wendys on the map. I've always wanted to check out some of those areas, but I don't even know where exactly to start... http://www.hikearizona.com/location_g.p ... 373&DYNA=2

I'm thinking later in October, maybe early November? Something that can either be a 1-2 night backpacker or a car camp with several day-hike options. I looked at the hikes on the traildex map, but I'm just not inspired...

i would be interested in these three peaks as a car camp/day hike outing, if you end up posting an event

i am somewhat familiar with that area. Have backpacked in the Muggins Mountains. But I think the Kofa National Wildlife Area is more interesting. Best time is winter and early spring. October can be nice or it can be hot. I didn't post many trips on here when I was living down there in 08-09, and spring of '07. I should probably put some of them up. Here is one I did post:

Best outdoor activity down there is kayaking the river and its side lakes, though. There are so many places to go, and it is really pretty. The desert out there is pretty bleak, but in the canyons it can be very interesting.

I also found some fun places to mountain bike. Road biking is popular there.

During the two winters I spent there I photographed 6 petroglyph sites and last summer gave a presentation about them at Homolovi.

So there are many places of interest, but I would start with the Kofa. It's huge.

Wabayuma Peak comes to mind for me. I have always wanted to go there. It's rugged, remote, seldom visited, and has ponderosa pine on top. Rugged rock outcroppings and steep slopes surround much of the summit. The summit elevation is 7,601. Old lightning fires have burnt a fair amount of the surrounding forest, however the top still has good coverage on the north slope. The views should be killer and nobody from HAZ has been there yet.

Dittos for me, but it is not near Yuma.

There is so much interesting stuff out there, and there is no one else hiking. You generally have any place you hike all to yourself.

if you go to the Yuma Visitors Center they should have two hiking booklets, with quite a few hikes, put together by a snowbird a few years ago. i have them, Yuma Hikes, Vols I and II.

The Stiller and I have tossed around a Hualapai Mountains hike for a while. I'm very interested in getting up there. I won't be available for a camping trip until the weekend of August 21st

Isn't that after the semester starts?

Peaks off the El Camino--- rugged and lightly visited. I've got a couple of places there I still need to get to. When we bagged Cabeza Prieta peak the summit register had 40 years of signatures in it and was still relatively small. No trails, but sometimes admin roads and old parts of the camino you can follow, but orienting is easy out there. Plus you have the border patrol watching you-- ;)

I stumbled upon this discussion today while doing a search for something completely different... I think it means that I'm supposed to revisit this idea (since it never happened in the first place).

Seemed to have been a popular option. That would be to me a better option for fall - which seems a long way away - but we all know how quickly that changes. Late October?
