What is your favorite hike in the Huachucas? I am planning on starting out at Montezuma Pass and hiking to Miller Peak and back on Saturday. I am trying to hike every trail in the Huachucas by the end of this year. So far I have done maybe 20%.
But I am looking for a great trail to do on Saturday. Any suggestions?

Btw, I'm not just a newbie that's posting and then gonna go away. I'm planin on staying on the forum, I like the amount of people on here with their knowledge. Although I am a newbie right now with a bad avatar, I won't be a noob for too long :p

I haven't explored the Huachucas yet. The day will come eventually.

I've done Miller, Carr and the AZT segment. Very impressed with all of them. Of course I hit Carr at peak wildflower and the AZT after a 3 inch rain so those visits are Memorexed for life. Randy, rwstorm, is the Huachucas expert in this neighborhood. Though I don't know if he goes out when it's cold or visits this forum.

One time I did a little backpack with the Scouts, up Brown's Canyon and down Ramsey Canyon. Camped somewhere near Hershberger Meadow, as I recall? It was fun but I hear the Huachucas are in the middle of the smuggling thoroughfare. I went there about 15 years ago. I seem to recall we saw some illegals even back then.

Smuggelers do come through here, however I have been backpacking a bit around here and have yet to see any. Also I work for the USFS here and out LEOs tell me it's really not anything to worry about. Their like snakes, they'll only bother you if you bother them :p

I did Montezuma Pass to Sunnyside in Nov. The trail was pristine-no trash or litter anywhere. Apparently someone has cleaned it up. There is what appears to be 24/7 Border Patrol presence at the pass, but the rangers tell me there is still quite a bit of nocturnal activity. None of the locals I talked to appeared to be worried about an encounter, as has been said here, they aren't looking for trouble anymore than you are. Same is true of the AZT people, who are asked this all the time, they have not heard of any negative incident's there. Not to say there won't be any, but I thing the rattlesnake analogy is quite appropriate.

A conservation crew out of Flagstaff (CREC) picked up all the trash back in Nov.
I am a ranger here on the Forest and love the area. I only wish I could hike the trails on work time haha.
I think I will enjoy my hike this weekend. I can't believe how nice the weather is this time of year in Southern AZ.
