Picket Post- Bad news

Took a drive today on US 60 on my way to Globe today (Fri. 5/20/11) to hike up 6 Shooter. I heard that there had been a fire around Picket Post last week but I had brushed it off as probably a small brush fire that had been put out quickly. WELL, WAS I WRONG! Sad to say a good sized area got burnt to a crisp. Looks like the whole area leading up to the drainage got incinerated as well as the NW facing wall of Picket Post. The fire burned right up to Bryce Thompson and by quick looks the part of Bryce Thompson adjacent to US 60 burned. The fire jumped the road in at least 1spot but probably 2 or 3 (too busy looking at the fire damage around Picket Post too count). The fire damage is VERY noticable for about 1.5-2 miles of driving along US 60. I'm gonna guess this fire scorched at least 2000 acres with all of it next to US 60 (Saguaro's may have survived). I'm sure some careless pumpkinhead threw a cigarette out the window since the burn is adjacent to the road for such a stretch. Very sad...

The fire was 1,336 acres. If you have Google Earth, you can view the perimeter of the fire by opening this file.

Most past fire perimeters are here on HAZ, but the 2011 fires aren't loaded yet.
