Canyon Creek?

This weekend is my daughter's 21st birthday. Her tradition on her birthday is for her and a few friends to spend the weekend at Canyon Creek. I know someone asked about Canyon Creek since the fire but I do not remember the response. Does anyone know how it is up there? Would you recommend she start a new tradition? :roll: Thanks.

Cindy: Apache Sitgreaves Nat'l Forest shows the Canyon Creek area as within the burn. You may wish to check with the Heber Ranger Station to be sure. Even with the fires out, they have closed much of the area due to danger from falling limbs and trees as well as holes where roots have burned (good way to break an ankle...)
Area on Old Rim Road west of the Young turnoff is ok. Also, I drove up to the Inner Basin trailhead on San Francisco Peaks a week ago in my altima sedan, so that road is much better than it used to be...That's a cool alternative at about 9k....aspens should be getting close....-R

Cindy, when we were up on the Rim a few weeks ago we went by Canyon Creek. At that point it was closed indefinately because ash fall had wreaked havoc on the creek.

As an alternative, may I suggest a visit to Tonto Creek. Camp at Upper Tonto camground or nearby. Hike Horton Creek, visit the fish hatchery and picnic at Horton day use site (locarted opposite Upper Tonto). Do a late afternoon, early evening or early morning hike and you may hear elk bugling and turkeys gobble, hike south of the Upper Tonto Campground (or you can drive along the road) adjacent to Tonto Creek and find an area of concealment, sit and be quite (read a book) and you may be rewarded.
