Rim to Rim (South to North)

I will be hiking the South Rim to the North Rim on Wednesday, August 1. JuanJamieiii (John) will be doing the Arizona Trail North to South and I will be driving his vehicle back to the South Rim. The plan is to catch the 5:10AM Hiker's Express from the Backcountry Office, make good time down to Phantom (jogging parts), then a steady pace from Phantom on (faster to Cottonwood, then slower as I get tired on the climb out). I am anticipating about 1:45 to Phantom, 4:00 to Cottonwood and clearing the North Rim in 8:00. Things don't always go according to plan, but that is the time table in my mind. I might be zapped and require a long break (who knows). Hike whatever pace you want (and/or depart when you want), whether it be faster or slower. If faster, you will just be waiting for me at the North Rim. If slower, I will gladly wait, check out the area and most likely take a nap. Any interest?

Its going to be warm. I'd recommend you start earlier. You've already seen the South Kaibab Trail so you can do that part by headlamp. Try to time it so you arrive at Phantom Ranch about 1/2 hour before sunrise. That'll get you out of the lower elevations before it warms up. You should have shade through most of the "Box". Once you get past Roaring Springs the temps shouldn't be too bad.
I wish I could join you...

Thanks for the advice. That sounds ideal, if I could only adjust my sleep schedule so that I can fall asleep before 1AM. I will have to work on it since hiking in cooler temperatures are so much more pleasant. Warm temps are not fun at all and they drain me, though I do plan on thoroughly soaking myself at each water station.

I will no longer be doing this hike, but I am unsure how to cancel the event. Will save it for cooler weather and when I don't have to wake up at o'dark o'clock to begin.

Without a linked hike it doesn't poll on the calendar so I just removed it. You can add it back and change the date in the future.
