South Bass to North Bass 8/17/14
Posted: Jul 31 2014 12:40 pm
I just received a permit for use area AR9 for the night of 8/17 (Sunday-Monday). I plan to leave Phoenix Saturday night (late) and be at South Bass trailhead by 3 or 4am. I'll cross the Colorado and spend Sunday night in the Shinumo Creek area. I'll be looking for a ruin near SC and something else in Flint Creek (I'll explain later). On Monday I'll cross back to SB and hike out. I expect to be home late Monday night. Total mileage may be around 24 for 2 days. This trip has the potential to cause death so I'm a bit hesitant to make a public invite. If you want to come, please be aware of the dangers of packrafting across the Colorado River. I'm only looking to add maybe 2-3 people.
Gear you'll need:
Boat: I'm using a cheap 2-man (women can use it too) boat from BIG 5. $17, 4lbs.
Kayak paddle: I picked up a decent aluminum paddle at Sports Authority for $30. weighs 25 ounces. I don't recommend the cheap plastic paddles that come with the cheap boats.
PFD, aka life vest: Big 5, Walmart, SA have a 16ounce class 3 for about $20-$25.
Wet Suit: Highly recommended! If you fall in the 50 degree water without one, you'll loose muscle control within a few minutes and likely drown, even with a PFD. I have a 3/2 Body Glove suit. $80 from Sports Authority. Sport Chalet rents them.
I'm bringing a manual air pump we can use to fill up the boats (10 minutes).
