Mt. Ord from Slate Creek TH ?

Post by JasonCleghorn »

Is there any way to know how much snow is on this trail at any given point in time, i.e. a snow depth report for Ord? I have looked at some snow depth reports for AZ such as on Weather Underground, etc. but it isn't listed, or I have overlooked it. ;)

I'm interested in doing this trail this weekend(four day weekend for me!), if anyone from the Valley wants to tag along.

I am not aware of publicly available weather data from Mt. Ord.

There is definitely not a SNOTEL site up there. And there was certain to have been snowfall there yesterday, which will absolutely not melt by this weekend.

Similar elevations and not terribly far away, Baker Butte and Promontory Point show between 3 and 11 inches of snow on the ground.

There is a weather station at the base of Mt. Ord in the Tonto Basin that registered .42" of rain yesterday, and I would expect that to have translated to about 6" of snow on Mt. Ord.

What the snow level will be this weekend (at what elevation will you encounter snow on the ground as you go up the mountain)? That's more of a wild guess. Personally, I would plan to see it in the 5500-foot range, with increasing depth once you get over 6,000.
I'm not sure what my spirit animal is, but I'm confident it has rabies.

@Jason Cleghorn

Bifrost and slow and steady went up there on the tenth, if you read comments, Karl commented there was 4-6 inches near top...taking that into consideration with what Chumley wrote should give you a pretty good idea..

I think a few people on HAZ drive past this on their daily commute. If you look back at previous forum history you might be able to figure out who they are and send em a PM?

My days of post-holing are over. Got enough of that in Idaho. But buy me a beer and I could be persuaded.

At this point I have plans for something this weekend. But I can keep next weekend free if I happen to find a 6 pack of IPA's sitting on my doorstep.

Is kinda dark when I drive past there every morning and evening... but this last storm in Payson was mainly rain and melted almost all the snow that was left and I think that happened on Mt Ord too...The snow seemed to be more in the Prescott area this last time around...Will try to look tonight but the moon won't help either since it isn't very bright right now...
