I have guests arriving in about a week from Idaho and want to drive and camp them in a canopy of Ponderosa pine so they can see that we are not all desert, sand and cactus. No hiking or backpacking as these are retired age experienced folks. Need a decent Forest Service road as we will not be four wheeling. Maybe somewhere nearby Globe, Arizona?

The Pinal's South of Globe and access is a maintained gravel road and park at Upper Pinal Campground. Head up to Payson and go East on AZ 260 to Tonto Creek and go North to Horton Creek Trailhead. There is day use area with picnic tables and restrooms.

From Globe, North on 188, North on 288 towards Young. Extreme scenery on a blacktop hwy, views of mountains, canyons, desert and Roosevelt Lake.

Your 2 closest options are the Pinals or Mt. Ord. Road up Pinals is better for a sedan.

I'd vote for the Pinals

@Joel Hazelton
Just an FYI... Mt Ord's road was recently graded.
I saw a Volvo sedan up top yesterday.
