Gas canister group buy

Is anyone interested in a gas canister group buy?

I have access to Primus, Coleman Outlander, Optimus, Burton, Olicamp, Jetboil/Jetpower and MSR canisters.

I can order as much as 50# shipped in a single box. Freight + a $28.50 hazmat fee on top. I think I can eat the shipping and hazmat fee and sell at retail price with tax included.

Price varies on brand but Jetboil canisters are $5.99/100g, $6.99/230g and $9.99/450g.

Let me know!

Hey goodgnus-

I've never participated in a group buy before. What's the benefit? Looks like the prices you mention are pretty much in line with what I would pay if I bought them on Amazon. :-k

@chumley

A 100g jetboil on amazon is $10.77 + 4.99 shipping. That's nearly 3 times the price.

Cool. So I can get a 100g jetboil canister from you for $5.99?

How many people have to sign up to make that possible?
Do you send them to all of us for free, or does shipping cost extra in a group buy too?
Would the price that each person pays change depending on how many people participate?
Would we pay you or somebody else, and by what method? ... credit, paypal?
Is the group buy organized through an individual (you?) or a 3rd party website?

Thanks for clarifying the details. As I mentioned earlier, this is new to me.

Yes, retail pricing with tax included. Ideally I fill a box to as close as 50# as possible. This would probably be 40 to 60 canisters. My portion would probably comprise 4 to 6 canisters so we'd need 9 more people at that same qty.

I am not offering re-shipping, due to hazmat regulations. Canisters would need to be picked up in downtown Tempe any day of the week at the business I manage.

Payment would be made in advance via PayPal. This is typical of a group buy. I need payment from the majority of the people so I'm not stuck with 40+ canisters.

Have prices gone up a lot on these? I bought some Jetboil 100g cans at Sports Authority maybe 1-2 years ago for 3.99.

@Dave1

Hazmat shipping has become a big deal recently, carriers are enforcing it and penalties for non compliance are stiff. This is what's driving up the cost. I haven't checked local prices, but I suspect whatever they are, theyre being sold at little to no profit. Even if I want to order a single canister from my supplier, there's a $28.50 hazmat fee. So I just thought I'd see if there's any interest in a group buy to distribute the cost.

@trekkin gecko

With shipping at $10.95 and a $20 hazmat fee at cabelas, a 12 pack of 100 gram becomes $85.94 before sales tax. That's $7.16 a canister pre tax.

But I can buy them locally for a lot less. Why do this?

That's what I've been wondering. I always get the mid-size one, I guess that's the 230, and never pay more than about 5 or 6 bucks. There are several off-brands available via the big chain stores, such as Big 5, which are pretty cheap, and work just fine. But I paid 5.99 for a 230 at Peace Surplus recently, and it was top-brand MSR in the red can.

I was thinking more along the lines of actually going to cabela's
not that I need a dozen fuel canisters
pretty sure az hiking shack has them for 4.99, and the 230g for 5.99
the hazardous goods surcharge does add significantly to the cost of fuel if you order it on line

Thanks for the info. Seems to be a concept that would work best for something I use more frequently or has a higher cost to begin with. Typically I buy 2-3 canisters a year (they last a surprisingly long time!), and I get them at a local bricks and mortar retailer. I'm sure a bulk purchase could save a couple of bucks, but it doesn't seem to make sense to me for this item.

Thanks for the intro to group buying though. I didn't realize it was a thing.

When I first saw this subject and read "Gas canister group" I thought you all were discussing some kind of a rock music group. :scared: :sl:

My thoughts as well. Watching the video where he is scavenging parts, it hit me: Just buy the *(&)^ thing! It kills me that I can't get fuel for my old GAZ stoves; and I've been obsessing over that forever. So just buy a new one that has a fuel supply already! I've gotten my $30 worth out of it.

I was at REI tonight and noticed that jetboil canisters are only $4.95. SnowPeak canisters were $4.50. REI isn't exactly famous for the lowest prices out there so I think you could probably find them for less at other retail stores.

Seems like this particular group buy wouldn't be a very smart choice. :M2C:

It was a spam post, I think. Guy never came back, doesn't hike, has no other posts but this one.
