Common Names: aka Rocky Mountain ponderosa pine; Southwestern Ponderosa Pine.

Habitat: On the Kaibab Plateau and atop the Mogollon Rim, it often forms nearly pure stands covering tens of thousands of acres. The forest stretching from near Flagstaff along the rim to the White Mountains region is the largest ponderosa pine forest on the continent.

Flowers: Monoecious; males yellow-dull red, cylindrical, in clusters near ends of branches; females reddish at branch tips.

Description: up to 50' tall. Bark: Very dark (nearly black) on young trees, developing cinnamon colored plates and deep furrows. rough.

Needles Evergreen, 5 to 10 inches long, with three (sometimes 2) tough, yellow-green needles per fascicle. (NOTE:Fascicles are "clumps"). When crushed, needles have a turpentine odor sometimes reminiscent of citrus.
Comments: a widespread and very variable pine native to western North America. closely related to Arizona Pine (Pinus arizonica). Currently stressed by drought and bark beetle.
