Lithobates yavapaiensis

The lowland leopard frog generally occupies Arizona's scrub lands below the Mogollon Rim into pinyon-juniper country. They do well in unregulated streams that flood periodically.

They are generally brown, though sometimes green, and can have a yellowish belly.

Unfortunately, their numbers are declining due to non-native species such as the common bullfrog and Rio Grande leopard frog outcompeting them in the same environments. There are probably no more Lowland Leopard Frogs surviving in the lower Colorodo on the western edge of Arizona due to this competition. Their numbers are declining much more slowly in central Arizona, as they can tolerate shallower pools than the non-natives.

They are a protected species, it is against Arizona Law to kill, trap, harass or collect them.
