Advanced V. Extreme

Post by BobP »

I recently noticed that there aren't any members listed as "extreme" in the match thinggy. I remember there used to be some...where did they go?

I've seen different definitions for "extreme" hikes and hikers and was wondering what peoples thoughts were on this topic. I've done some difficult day hikes, but I don't think any were extreme.
Some definitions I've seen were...over 14 miles,over 4k in elevation,ones that lack oxygen.
What would you call an extreme hike?

Thanks for all the responses...I was looking for individual comments because I saw a lot of "extreme" hikes and definitions that I didn't think were extreme. To me an extreme hike would be like Denali....but like others have said what is extreme is subjective to the person. I'm going for a walk in a park tonight...can you guess Joe? What Joe calls a walk....I call a hike :)

Found something to revive this link about Extreme as it would relate to hiking or climbing or biking but definitely height related. With the recent adventures of JJ, Joe and Dave1 on Weavers Needle and Brahma Temple still burning holes in my brain, I found this link to Extreme Heights.

Isn"t that JJ in #13, or NoNot in #18, or Joe in #22, or Johnlp in #3 and that's gotta be Hippy in #29.

On every trip into the Superstitions, I find another Gold Mine. Today the mine was filled with Memories. I can not wait for the next trip.

I don't know about 13, 18, or 22, but I hope I speak for the majority of males on HAZ...when I say I liked number 15 the most ;)

Speaking to the last page, I guess I was once "Extreme" by some definitions, based on how I did Humphrey and so on, and while last year I was doing really well in the last 1/3 of the year, I was more "Advanced", I think. Right now, I reduced to intermediate. Poor health, and continuously getting sick every 3 to 4 weeks in 2014 has taken a toll on me.

Those images are more spectacular, as they are making a spectacle, and not really about a level of fitness or ability in many of them.

So...I've finally come up with my personal definition of extreme....

http://www.thedogteam.com/14ers-Web_Pag ... eners.html

55 peaks over 14k...with 138k aeg and 143k aeg loss over a 10 day period :worthy: throw it a bunch of miles and class 1-4 some trails...some off-trail but almost always in elevation above 1oK.

That is very extreme. The annual Sierra Challenge is pretty extreme, too. Varies from year to year, but it always looks hard.
