My Memorial Week/Weekend!

Post by Elaine2003 »

Well, i'll give you a quick run down of what i did on my vacation for Memorial week/weekend.

Flew up to WA to see a friend of mine. I hiked around Mt Rainer a little. There were almost whiteout conditions up there when i went, so the hiking was at a bare minium. But, completely amazing/breathtaking scenery though! Mt. Rainer happens to be the tallest point in WA and is an active volcano. There are also 26 glaciers there.
(a little about the national park)

( dead link removed )

Went to the summit of Mt. Constitution at Moran State Park on Orcas Island at the San Juan Islands, WA. Back in 1921, Robert Moran, a shipbuilder and former mayor of Seattle donate 2,000+ acres of his own land to the state the create the park, which included the summit if i remember right. He tried to donate the land sooner, but, there was no government agency for such a thing yet. So with his own money, he built roads and bridges so that back then people could experience the ambience in what is now the Moran State Park. (I remembered all this information cause i though what this man did was very generous.)
At the summit of Mt. Constitution there is an observation tower there where you can see 360 degrees. You could see the all the other islands that make up the San Juan Islands and Vancouver, Canada.
I also saw deer on the island. That kinda threw me for a second or two. My friend and i joked about how the deer got on the island, "Maybe they caught the ferry??".
Also, went on a whale watching tour near San Juan Island. Saw the J Pod, which is part of the southern resident community that are inhabits the area. The southern resident community is the orca population that consists of the J, K, and L pods. I think i might have used 5 rolls of film on the Orcas alone. But, it was amazing to see them in their natural element and not at a place like SeaWorld. Saw some bald eagles, 1 eagle nest, and a few seals and sealions on the tour as well.

Also, I went to the REI flagship store in Seattle. ON MY GOSH!!!!
This was a 4/four/IV (you get the drift) story building completely dedicated to outdoor recreation.
Complete with test trails for hikers and bikers alike so the customers could test out the equiptment before they buy.
And one H*LL of a rock wall - 65feet tall! And it happens to be one of the tallest freestanding climbing walls in the world.

Overall, I had an amazing vacation. I took lots of photos and cant wait to see the results!

Orcas

Post by chihiggs »

Elaine--sounds like a perfect long weekend!! I have a request. I realize we are about hiking but would you mind posting a couple of your pictures of the Orcas in their habitat? I am originally from the Mid-West and have only seen them in Seaworld or the Discovery channel... If you can't post them here, I think my e-mail is listed; would you mind sending me one or two shots? There is just that little extra something cool about photos. Anyway, if my e-mail isn't listed (I haven't looked), PM me and I'll give it to you.

Thanks for the fun posting!!
