On what hike in AZ have you been the most nervous

Post by JasonCleghorn »

/afraid due to heights or exposure and why? No animal encounters and only non-technical hikes.

This came to mind because I saw the pics for Cheops Pyramid... :scared: :scared:

Four Peaks with Janelle - something happened and I suddenly was extremely disoriented. Not enough food? Water? Not sure, but my sense had left the building and I was trying to convince her to go the wrong way. I was so angry that she didn't understand that we needed to go that way. I almost started crying when I realized that I was so exhausted I couldn't think anymore and gave in. Then it started raining, and my feet wouldn't stick to the ground and I started slipping every which way on the wet quartzite.

The following 14 hours hunkered down in a flashing torrential thundercloud while becoming hypothermic, were much less scary!

I'll never forget reading that trip report.... ever. and many times when you two converse on FB I think of that day/nite. and of course some of your quite successful and less eventful hikes too.
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

Camelback mountain Cholla Trail. I remember attempting the hike early this year, was new to hiking back then. I remember being so scared of slipping and falling. :o
The whole way I kept thinking to myself what if I slip and fall and break my leg then I'm going to have to miss work and be on crutches..looping in my head the whole time. My husband (14er finisher) was with me and he tried his best to encourage me but it was just too much. I told him I had to quit.. This was even before reaching the saddle.
I think i only made it 1/4 of the way up. It was definitely more mental than physical.
After that i decided to really start hiking. Hiked longer distances, more elevation gain and exposure (at least to in my book). I think my breakout hike was Wilson Mountain trail Which i did less than a month later. Since then I've been going to higher places.
Went back to Camelback 2 months after the 1st attempt and completed the hike worry free.

In short .. it's Camelback Cholla trail hike.. So far.

Backpacking off trail in Utah, unreliable water sources, hotter weather than forecast, and even more unreliable beta, didn't find water over a day and a half period and started making poor decisions after I started to ration my remaining water. Got very low on water reserves. Was very relieved to find water in a most improbable place.

Second was probably hiking the Highline in summer a few years back. Couldn't find the trail, brain got hot and started making poor decisions in looking for it, got heat exhaustion, and collapsed in the shade of some meager bushes. I had water which eventually (yeah, your brain doesn't work so well when overheated) I figured out I could use to cool off my head a bit. Eventually turned around and was worried I wouldn't be able to hike out the rest of the way as I was feeling very poor at the time. Luckily it was about 8-10 miles so I had recovered a bit by the time I hit the uphill sections.

Year and a half ago, set out to do a quarter mile loop at Gilbert Riparian Reserve. Was pretty nervous I wouldn't make it. It turned out OK.

I have a pretty good guardian angel.

I've never gotten nervous while hiking, but I'd definitely advise to use caution if hiking around the Chiricahua National Monument. I did the Big Loop hike one day (9.5 miles), by myself, and saw half a dozen rattlesnakes. Had almost stepped on one, and was less than a foot from two others who were hiding in cracks in parts of rock walls. Thankfully they give fair warning.
